Can anyone identify this item, about 18 inches high. Was amongst some Zeppelin items.

At first glance I'd say a cylinder head from a rotary engine of some sort.

Mick,

Whats the 'ribbed' part made of? Steel, Ceramic, Cast?

And what do you make of the holes down the bottom? Are they pits in the metal, or holes for gas to run through?

It is steel, all the holes are bored. Yes it does look like a cylinder head but the hanging ring confused me. The item is hollow.

Looks like a cylinder of a radial engine , maybe some one has tried to turn it into a gong . Does it ring if you suspend it by the top ring and belt it ?.

No I dont think it would. The ring does seem integral to the piece...and its not really a decorative or practical item.

I think you will find they are the push rods that activate the tappets.
