decypher medal record card

Hi All,

I know that my Great Grandfather was a Private during the first world war, thats why i am a little puzzled. I have recently aquired his medal record card, thanks to one of the pals. On it under the heading of Rank, it does not seem to say Pte. Please take a look at the attached file, and let me know what you think.

A agree that it is hard to read, but I think the first ambiguous character is a P and the others a T and a E = Pte = Private. CWGC seems to confirm this, but for total confirmation check the medal roll. The ones I've viewed are typewritten so it should be much clearer.
