Geoff Parker Posted 12 January , 2004 Share Posted 12 January , 2004 A friend gave me a newspaper cutting which has an unusual piece of information; The village of Cayton between Scarborough and filey in North Yorkshire has no war memorial, not out of disrespect for the many millions who died in both wars but because amazingly of the 43 men of the village who served in the Great War all returned. This was again repeated in WW2 when all the men of the village returned after the war. After WWI the grateful residents of Cayton decided to put up a memorial clock their the local church. Apparently there are 32 other villages in the UK that did not suffer the loss of its menfolk during either war, one of which was Upper Slaughter in Glouscestershire. Clive Temple Posted 8 November , 2005 Share Posted 8 November , 2005 My fathers family originate from Cayton and certainly none of them were killed.
Alan_J Posted 8 November , 2005 Share Posted 8 November , 2005 I'm pretty sure that in "Blindfold and Alone" there is a village named (in Sussex??) where all men who served (WW1) also returned, and yet they decided to put up a memorial anyhow! Alan <{POST_SNAPBACK}> East Wittering - but it's a modern memorial.
