The sepia photos and the series of photos showing the absolute devastation of the battlefield, among others with a dead horse in a shell hole (all representing the front lines in the Fleury - Thiaumont sector) are from the film made at the end of the 20s that was re-released last October. I came across many of them in the army photo archives in Paris when I was looking for photos of Fort Douaumont and use one of them in my book. I think they are a very fair representation of the state of the battlefield at the time. Some of them were used in the film shown in the Memorial de Fleury but they have a new film now. I have copies of many of the postcards, including the striking one of the Ossuary with beams of light shining from the tower. The old postcards are interesting because they show the battlefield without much vegetation. I wish they'd cut it all down. In the early 60s you could see Fort Vaux from the St. Fine crossroads - views like that would really help to make the battle understandable.

Have you ever seen the Ossuary tower with the light on, Malte? It's very spooky, especially when the pane of red glass comes round and a red eye looks out over the battlefield.

Swine: Froideterre - you used to be able to go along the corridor and into the barrack rooms and to the machine gun turret but it's a while since I was inside and it's definitely not in a good state. I don't recommend wandering about in the old forts and fieldworks and the gendarmerie checks it out fairly regularly.
