(or any other details). Many thanks, Raymond Wilfred STANLEY Air Mechanic 2nd Class 43126 Royal Flying Corps Died in England on Tuesday 17 January 1917 Joining the Royal Flying Corps only shortly before his death, Raymond was killed in a flying accident at Hounslow Aerodrome. The machine he was flying rose to a height of 100 feet when it suddenly nose-dived and plummeted to earth. Raymond was so seriously injured in the crash that he died on his way to hospital. He was 25 years old. His Commander, Captain Sanday, wrote to the family, “We understand he had already passed and even exceeded the stipulated hours, and some few days previous to this fatal flight had finished his flying, and had early in January actually written home to say that he was on his last machine before coming home on leave before proceeding overseas. However, on the 17th he again flew a new and powerful machine, and for some unexplainable reason this machine crashed to the ground at a height of only about 100 feet, as already stated. mickdavis Posted 23 September , 2007 Share Posted 23 September , 2007 42 Reserve Squadron at Hounslow was the first such training unit to receive the RE8, whose 140-hp engine would make it more powerful than the BE2c, BE2e and FK3 machines that it also operated. Stanley was killed in A3407. Interestingly, the machine seems to have seen later service, as did A3409 and A3410, which were also involved in accidents while serving with 42RS/TS. A3407 42 RS Hounslow and 17.1.17 2AM R.W.Stanley KIFA. 9 Sqn ex 1AD 10.8.1917 and wrecked. A3409 42 RS Hounslow and crashed 11.3.17, Lt HL Lascelles KIFA. 52 Sqn (by 11.17 until @ 3.18). A3410 42 TS Hounslow (by 5.17) and crashed 18.8.17. MOS Leysdown (by 8.18 until @ 2.19). Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
