Howitzer

Could anyone tell me what what form of propellant was used in the 6 inch 26cwt BL howitzer? I know that some artillery weapons used 'fixed' and some 'unfixed' ammunition to propel the shell. I have looked at what information is available on first world war web sites and have read Farndale's excellent 'History of the Royal Regiment of Artillery' but cannot find this information.

The 6" 26cwt used separate ammunition, the propellant was a bag charge of between 4 3/4 and 5 1/4 lbs depending on which projectile was in use.

A reliable source for details of the ammunition type for all British WW1 artillery is "British Artillery Weapons and Ammunition 1914 -1918" by IV Hogg & LF Thurston, Published by Ian Allan 1972. Long out of print but copies do turn up at book fairs from time to time.
