reformbill Posted 11 January , 2004 Share Posted 11 January , 2004 Could anyone tell me what what form of propellant was used in the 6 inch 26cwt BL howitzer? I know that some artillery weapons used 'fixed' and some 'unfixed' ammunition to propel the shell. I have looked at what information is available on first world war web sites and have read Farndale's excellent 'History of the Royal Regiment of Artillery' but cannot find this information. Mike_H Posted 11 January , 2004 Share Posted 11 January , 2004 The 6" 26cwt used separate ammunition, the propellant was a bag charge of between 4 3/4 and 5 1/4 lbs depending on which projectile was in use. Mike

reformbill Posted 12 January , 2004 Author Share Posted 12 January , 2004 Thanks Mike - very helpful. If it is not too much trouble could you direct me to the sources of such information? Peter
Mike_H Posted 12 January , 2004 Share Posted 12 January , 2004 Peter A reliable source for details of the ammunition type for all British WW1 artillery is "British Artillery Weapons and Ammunition 1914 -1918" by IV Hogg & LF Thurston, Published by Ian Allan 1972. Long out of print but copies do turn up at book fairs from time to time. Mike
reformbill Posted 15 January , 2004 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2004 Thanks again Mike. I have managed to trace and order a copy of Hogg and Thurston - at a price! Peter
