Can I mention these five men please - all died in the war

Capt Alfred Squire Taylor (attached 10/11 HLI)

Captain Robert Henry Wilson (attached 84th RFA)

Lt Walter Tennyson McCurry

Lt Bertram Chiene Letts (13th Casualty Clearing Station)

Capt Alfred Maurice Thomson (7th Royal Sussex Regt)

Happy to let you have all the details I have, if you're interested. Do you have any thing about any of them?

Thanks

You are probably already aware of it but the history of the 2/2 City of London Field Ambulance has a comprehensive list of those who served with it at pp. 100-112.

Hi Alan

Just checked and I have them all listed. I have Capt Wilson down as serving with the 34th Bde RFA though, so will need to look into that more. I was in Ramparts Cemetery last week so probably have a photo of Lt McCurry's headstone, I haven't had a chance to sort through my photos yet.

They are not on my database yet so I will look and see if I can find anymore info on them and come back to you. Anything you have will be greatfully received but I'll let you know what I can find first if you like.

Thanks

Barbara

Thank you so much for posting the newspaper articles. I will download and store them for when the website is ready. Just one thing, the first post is a bit blurry and I can't make out the surname of the Lance Cpl, can you confirm his surname?

Many thanks

Barbara

(This is excellent. I knew it was a good idea to do a database, I just knew it :D )

Thanks for the link to the book The Second-Seconds in France. I didn't know it was on-line but I have seen it and I have a copy of a 1930s list of members from the Old Comrades' Association. I really appreciate you posting the link though.

Barbara - regarding Wilson, CWGC lists him as 84th RFA, and SDGW 34th RFA, so the confusion is understandable!

Now I could be talking nonsense here but working on the basis that the RFA designation matches their brigade, this means he was either in the 11th Divison (34th) or 28th Divison (84th).

The 34th were part of the 11th Division who were on the Western Front through 1916 and 1917, and the 28th were in Salonika from November 1915 till the end of the war. Wilson died in May 1917 and is buried in Etaples, so I reckon that suggests the 34th is correct. Happy to hold my hands up if this logic is wrong!

==

If you'd care to PM me your email address, I'll send you what I have on the five men. And would very much like to see what you have, when you have a moment to put it together.

Regards

Alan

Thank you so much

Hi Barbara,

I'm sorry there's been a delay over the past month. I've only just returned to the Forum. The source for the recent post on the Leeds Dispensary is as follows:

The Annual Report of the Board of Leeds Public Dispensary [North Street] No. XCV. July 1st, 1918-June 30th, 1919. pp. 9-10.

My Mam and Dad remember being treated there when children in the Forties-neither are very complimentary to say the least, and my Dad recalls the use of a wire brush to treat a knee injury. Sounds painful!

Kind Regards,

Dave

Hello Dave,

I have nothing to add to your last posting. I just wanted to say that it's good to have you back. The Forum hasn't been the same without your quality contributions and your gentlemanly courtesy.

Warm welcome,

Thanks for posting the list of men from the East Lancs Field Ambulance. I do have them recorded but have just cross referenced a couple and do not have any of the addresses. Thanks also for additional info on Capt Marshall. It is really helpful and I know of others who will be interested in the additional info on the list.

My old website is down now but the new one should be up and running in the next few days, when it is I will add these men to it.

This information is fantastic. I came up with the idea of a database to help people trace information on their relatives. I'm sure you are aware that there were thousands of RAMC personnel serving and that they were attached to Divisions, as well as serving in CCSs, hospital ships and hospitals etc, so any information that seperates, for example, one William Brown RAMC from another William Brown RAMC is really really helpful.

When I know what I am doing I will add a link to the manchester regt forum.

Charles Marshall is one of my original researchees. I am just waiting for a revised biography to be uploaded to my website (along with the biographies of another 16 RAMC fatalities from the Stockport area) but here's the advanced copy:-

"Charles Marshall had been born on 13 October 1888 in Nottinghamshire. His parents, William and Sarah, lived at Greenwood Lee, The Park, Cheadle Hulme. William Marshall was employed as the Public Analyst for the Borough of Hyde and had his laboratory on Ladybrook Road. Charles had studied medicine at Manchester University and, after qualifying, worked as house surgeon at Bradford Royal Infirmary. For four years, he had been engaged to a Miss Hook, who was also training to be a doctor at Guys Hospital, London.

Charles’ unit should not be confused with the modern usage of the word “ambulance”. A Field Ambulance in the Great War was usually based only a few hundred yards behind the front line. It dressed wounds and carried out some emergency operations, before passing wounded soldiers further to the rear. Charles’ Ambulance had been formed in Manchester and was attached to 42 Division (which included the Manchester Regiment Territorial battalions) at Gallipoli.

At the time of his death, he was aboard the troopship HMS “Royal Edward”. The ship had arrived off Alexandria in Egypt on 10 August, setting sail for Mudros on the 13th, taking replacement troops to Gallipoli. The German submarine, UB14, spotted her at about 9 a.m. on 13th when she was about 400 miles north of Alexandria and around 7 miles west of Kandeliusa Island. She fired off one torpedo which struck the Royal Edward in the stern. Within 3 minutes she began to settle by the stern and in another 3 her bows were in the air. Charles Marshall’s body was never recovered and identified and it is presumed he drowned.

Later a Lieutenant Wilson wrote to his father “They struck a mine coming from Alexandria and spent 3 or 4 hours in the water, before being picked up by a hospital ship and a destroyer. Am much afraid that Marshall who was with them went down with the ship. After seeing all his men off the ship and encouraging them, he was last seen leaning on the rail of Captain’s bridge, looking down quite calmly at them. He was so very tough and so much at home in the water, that we have not lost hope that he was picked up by some other vessel. It was very characteristic of him to get all the men off in the way he did and then to stem any panic among them by calmly standing about the bridge. It helped them a lot because several men have told me that after seeing him so calm they were led to look on the whole thing as more or less of a joke. He would fight for his life like a fiend when he got in the water.”

Lieutenant F B Smith of the Ambulance wrote in a letter home. “Of the 50 men of our Ambulance, only 3 are lost. I have not told you what a corporal of our section has told me, that he saw Capt. Marshall, long after he himself was in the water, still on the highest deck with the captain of the ship, revolver in hand, encouraging and controlling the men. He had no need to use his weapon because discipline was splendid. The men knew his worth and not one but has spoken to me sadly of our loss. Such a cool courageous “sticking to duty” was characteristic of the man he was.”

Also aboard was another local man, Harry Turner, also on his way to Gallipoli with a Field Ambulance unit. "
