GWRCo Posted 26 August , 2007 Share Posted 26 August , 2007 Hi all! .........am wondering if any member has a complete listing of all the RFC stations in the UK please? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! tim
centurion Posted 26 August , 2007 Share Posted 26 August , 2007 Best I can do is the following list of aerodromes used in Great Britain 1914/18. I can't claim its 100% but I suspect its close. I've tried to indicate some of the obvious RNAS stations but can't claim to have differentiated them all - in any case some airfields changed service during the war and some were shared. This list will include those used for flights of a larger squadron, advanced strips, temporary strips etc but its a start. Moonraker Posted 26 August , 2007 Share Posted 26 August , 2007 I think that such a list has been posted and embellished before, but from my very parochial viewpoint I can add these: Stonehenge Lopcombe Corner (Wiltshire/Hampshire border) Challis Hill (Hampshire) Yatesbury Lake Down Lark Hill (closed pre1914) Old Sarum Rollestone balloon school (and Tilshead out station) Rendcomb (Gloucestershire) Halton (Buckinghamshire) Moonraker
mickdavis Posted 27 August , 2007 Share Posted 27 August , 2007 The following is as comprehensive a listing as I could find over 20+ years. It includes all flying sites in the UK and Ireland, plus one in the Channel Islands. The sites include manufacturers' aerodromes, balloon/airship stations and landing grounds, as well as aerodromes and seaplane stations. GWRCo Posted 27 August , 2007 Author Share Posted 27 August , 2007 ...............Many many thanx chaps, it's greatly appreciated for the time everyones taken!! I know here on the island of Ireland, we only have two RFC stations left, the 1st being RAF Aldergrove, and the other down south which is Baldonnel where the blue max film was done back in the 60's. My thanx to all once again!! tim

Guest Lukeyboy1983 Posted 7 May , 2009 Share Posted 7 May , 2009 My great grandad served in the RNAS. On his service record he is listed as being at "Furness" in 1917. Do I take this as being Barrow in Furness (as the 2 lists above would suggest) or was Furness somewhere altogether different? Thanks
20th Division Posted 8 May , 2009 Share Posted 8 May , 2009 My great grandad served in the RNAS. On his service record he is listed as being at "Furness" in 1917. Do I take this as being Barrow in Furness (as the 2 lists above would suggest) or was Furness somewhere altogether different? Thanks I live very close to HARLING ROAD WW1 airfield in Norfolk. ( Harling Road is a staion on the Norwich to cambridge railway route). Still surviving buildings include 1 of the original 5 or 7 hangers ( used as a workshop now for Attleborough commercial vehicles Ltd)-inside it is still in excellent nick and many of the original stove-pipe exits-presumably used for heating!!! still exist¬ The original hospital is now a bungalow and until only 2 years ago the "bomber workshop" was still being used by Van driel engineering as their main workshop! it has now been demolished!! also the original Chapel was still there about 15 years ago-now just a concrete hard-stand. Best wishes Dave.

Best wishes Dave. Fascinating. I have just been up in the loft researching my fathers time in the RAF when I came accross dozens of photo's that belonged to my grandparents. Along with a whole host of portraits of girls in RFC/RAF uniforms there are 2 aerial ones of Feltwell aerodrome taken in May 1918, complete with biplanes on the ground (suspect DH-4's and a smaller scout type) as well as about 10 of Harling Rd aerodrome from the same time. The very vague story goes that my Grandmother was based at Harling road and she used to paint/dope the linen wings and fuselage of the aircraft there. I believe she met my Grandfather here who I suspect was based at Feltwell as ground crew as they married shortly after meeting at an airbase. From what I have discovered 94 Sqn was based at Harling Rd which began training pilots in 1917 on Camels before going operational in May 1918 which was the time my grandparents were there). Evewntually the Sqn moved to France using SE5a's so its nice to know my Gran worked on such iconic aircraft. Anyway as this is my first post Im not sure if I can post the photo's of the airfileds but if there is any interest let me know. Maybe someone out there knows more about these places which will help me fill in one more piece of our family jigsaw puzzle.
stephen p nunn Posted 14 November , 2009 Share Posted 14 November , 2009 I notice that Maldon is mentioned here as a site. There was never an aerodrome in Maldon itself as such. 37 (HD) Squadron had flights at nearby Goldhanger, Stow Maries and Rochford (with an HQ at Woodham Mortimer). There were a few early baloon launches from the town and seaplane activity nearby at Osea Island. Alan Cobham brought his flying circus here. The USAAF planned a base but it didn't happen - there were WW2 aerodromes not far away at Birch (US) and Bradwell (RAF). Regards. 8Miles Posted 31 December , 2009 Share Posted 31 December , 2009 Very interesting thread. When you think you can add RNAS seaplane stations to Britain's airstation infrastructure it shows how massive air power had become in such a short space of time. Incidently I have heard several times ( although probably just an old wives tale ) that a German WW2 bomber is said to come down in one of the reservoirs and is still there, mind you a Hurricane was discovered in nearby Epping Forest sometime in the 70s so I suppose you never know there might be an element of truth in the story.
