Army Service Corps - what do these initials mean?

Leonard Charles Watcham, S/307083, a butcher, already in the Reserve, was called for service on 1st February 1917. He joined on 1st March at Stratford.

He proceeded to France on the SS Huntscraft on 16th April 1917, arriveing at Le Havre the next day.

He went first to the ASC Base Depot (HT and S). What does "HT & S" stand for?

Shortly thereafter he was transferred to what looks like "11th Corps TSC" but on the next line this is abbreviated to "11 CTSC." Or is this "II CTSC" (II Corps?) and what does "TSC" stand for?

Again, after just a few days he was transferred to "49 DSC." I understand this to be the 49th Divisional Supply Column. On his discharge document his unit is given as "49th Division MT Coy ASC."

Thank you,

Noel

Hello again Noel

HT & S means Horse Transport and Supply. There was a separate ASC Depot for Mechanical Transport personnel.

CTSC is Corps Troops Supply Column, which was an ASC MT company which supplied those troops forming part of a corps but not in one of the divisions within the corps.

A Corps Supply Column (sic) would include a Corps Troops Supply Column plus Divisional Supply Columns for each division in the corps. There were also Divisional Ammunition Parks but in early 1918 these were amalgamated with Divisional Supply Columns to form Divisional MT Companies ASC.

All of these units were in fact MT, so Pte Wareham was probably in the Supply personnel ASC. This is consistent with his being a butcher. His responsibilities would involve care of the meat being transported by lorry to the troops.

Incidentally XI Corps Corps Supply Column was also known as "E" Supply Column, and another ASC unit attached to the corps was "E" Siege Park.

49 Divisional Supply Column MT was ASC Co. 349

it was formed 1 April 1915

and started life on the Western Front with 2 ANZAC [WO95/1042]

disbanded 19 May 1919

when its Theatre was still the Western Front serving with 49th (West Riding) Division (22 Corps)
