Remembered Today:

Artillery unit numbering

Hi all

An atillery question as may have guessed from the title!

Is it possible to tell from just the battery number the brigade or division that the unit served in?

Is there also a logical pattern of numbering in relation to the brigade or division that has a relation to geographical area?

I have a Military Medal named to 36237 Sergeant John Arthur Veness V.20 Trench Mortar Battery, and from Chris' wonderful site we can ascertain that the V.20 battery is a heavy mortar battery and was located within the 20th (Light) Division. There is a logical numbering to the other trench mortar batteries that follows the same divisional numbering - or at least this is what it seems to me - so, did the other sections of Artillery also have a logical numbering system?

As you may have guessed I know nothing about the artillery, my apologies for this but I shall try harder!

Regards

Andrew
