Remembered Today:

Hospital in Cardiff

Can any pal tell me if there was a specific hospital for war casualties in Cardiff and is so does it still exist? My grandfather was wounded on the Somme in September 1916. His records show that he was eventually taken to a CCS some 24 hours after the incident and then he was shipped back to the hospital at Rouen and from there eventually back to Cardiff.

Many thanks

The main Hospital was

3rd Western General (15 Newport Road, Cardiff)

36 beds for Officers

2626 beds for other ranks

There was a Auxiliary Hospital in Albany Road

The City Asylum was used as a Military Mental Hospital

For info he was admitted to the Welsh Metropolitan W.H. Whitchurch, Glamorgan.

I`m staying at my daughter`s house half a mile from the old Psychiatric Hospital at Whitchurch. She worked there for 6 months as a junior doctor. I used to visit her there. I believe it`s still a psychiatric hospital with other bits tacked on.

'lo Phil,

Whitchurch Hospital was used as the site of the Welsh Metropolitan War Hospital 1915-1919 and the Cardiff Royal Infirmary War Emergency Hospital during the 1940s. It was indeed an asylum and was taken over for use as a military hospital. See THIS LINK on the parent site.
