Hi Chris

You may have him already but this man was from Fremantle, Western Australia.

He was studying medicine at Edinburgh University when war was declared and as he was part of the RNVR he offered his services and was accepted.

Chris just found this thread and I have "done" a number of memorials this man is from the Archiestown Memorial in Morayshire Scotland

Allardyce, William J. Surgeon (Probationer)

Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve HMS “Negro”

Died in a collision at sea on the 21st of December 1916 aged 19

He was the son of George and Janet Swirles. Allardyce of “Advie” Grosvenor Road, Dublin

He was educated at St Andrew’s College and Trinity College Dublin and entered the Navy before completing his medical training which gave him the rank of “probationer” surgeon

On the night of the 21st of December 1916 the HMS “Negro” was in collision with the destroyer leader HMS “Hoste”, with “Negro” sinking with the loss of five officers and forty six ratings. “Hoste”, the larger ship was taken under tow by fellow destroyers HMS “Marvel” and HMS ”Marmion” but the damage to Hoste was so extensive that she too sank with the loss of four ratings

William Allardyce’s body was lost to the sea and he is commemorated on the Chatham Memorial to the Missing Panel 20.

I'll keep looking now I know you're out there
