Bob Coulson Posted 6 January , 2004 Posted 6 January , 2004 Bit of a long shot but am researching a man who drowned on the above date as the ship was in passage from Lagos to England. Would anyone have any details of the ship or the incident? Bob.
Terry Denham Posted 6 January , 2004 Posted 6 January , 2004 Bob "British Vessels Lost at Sea 14-18 & 39-45" lists four vessels sunk on that day in possible waters with fatalities. PLUTUS torpedoed off Trevose Head - 1 fatality BARNTON torpedoed off Chassiron Light - 14 fatalities FERNDENE torpedoed off Bishop rock - 9 fatalities ABOSSO torpedoed off Fastnet - 65 fatalities
Yorts Posted 7 January , 2004 Posted 7 January , 2004 Hi, Who was the individual concerned and what other details do you have? This might help narrow down the search a bit. Rgds, Alex.
Bob Coulson Posted 7 January , 2004 Author Posted 7 January , 2004 Terry, Thanks for that, four ships narrows it down a bit. At the moment Abasso looks favourite found references to people in Ghana being lost with it and my man Capt Cecil Aubrey Bradford - Yorks Regt attd to the Nigeria Regt sailed from Lagos, possible the ship picked up at various ports.? He's on the Hollybrook Memorial. Will dig a little further on this. Bob.
Yorts Posted 8 January , 2004 Posted 8 January , 2004 He was definitley lost on the SS Abosso (not Abasso) drowning at sea on the24th april 1917 aged 31. He came from Tettenhall Wood near Wolverhampton and was the son of Lt. Col. O.J. and Mrs M.A.E. Bradford of Welparke, Lustleigh, Devon. I can confirm he is commemorated on the Hollybrook memorial. Rgds, Alex.
Bob Coulson Posted 8 January , 2004 Author Posted 8 January , 2004 Alex, Thanks for that, saves me some digging. How did you get the info? Bob.

The trio to Sergeant Armourer/Civilian Armourer Thomas Insley, attached 4th Bn,Nigeria Regiment, was the very first Group of Medals I purchased from an e Bay Auction, over two years ago!He has two MiCs,which I must get copied, but I have some very interesting research sent on to me @ the time of purchase by a local historian concerning Thomas, most notable I feel that on getting hit in the stomach by an enemy Bullet he promptly sat down, got out his clasp knife & proceeded to extract the offending article himself!!,Proper 'Boys Own Paper' stuff!
Michael Lowrey Posted 31 July , 2004 Posted 31 July , 2004 ABOSSO, 7782 grt, an armed merchant ship, was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U 43 on April 24, 1917 180 miles WxN of Fastnet 50°50N' 15'W. TrenchCoat Posted 23 October , 2016 Posted 23 October , 2016 Hi Bob Coulson, I do hope you are still reading these threads. Along with a colleague, I am also researching Capt Cecil Aubrey Bradford as he is on the Lustleigh War Memorial (in Devon) and we have an ongoing project of commemmorating them on the 100th anniversary of their demise. It would be great if we could share information; having said that, we've only just started so you may have more than us already, but we'll happily let you know what we've got now, what we find out in the next couple of months and the finished article which will appear in our parish magazine. Regards Chris
johnboy Posted 23 October , 2016 Posted 23 October , 2016 Unfortunately, Bob has not been on for around 2 1/2 yrs. You could try a pm as he might be notified by email.
