Derek Robertson Posted 6 January , 2004 Posted 6 January , 2004 I'm looking for any information on Sec.Lt. Andrew Stewart M.C of the 10th Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers who was killed near Ypres 20/09/1917. He is buried in LARCH WOOD (RAILWAY CUTTING) CEMETERY. Andrew graduated with an MA in Divinity(?) as he is mentioned in a local newspaper as the Reverend A Stewart. Any help would be appreciated
Guest captain sensible Posted 7 June , 2007 Posted 7 June , 2007 I know that he was the Minister of the United Free Church, Isle of Whithorn, before he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division. You already have the other information that I have about him, but the current misister of that church may know more about him
Hett65 Posted 7 June , 2007 Posted 7 June , 2007 Derek Attached is a photograph of the church at the Isle of Whithorn, my wife's family originate from the Isle and lived about 100 yards from the church. I have only been inside once and sadly that was when my mother in law died and was buried from the church. She always told me that the reason the church was built onto the foreshore was that they could not get any land in the village to build the church on, this was possibly an old wives tale, but you never know. I can remember seeing a large plaque to 2nd Lt Stewart in the church, his regiment was DLI and he was the holder of the MC. I do not have a photograph of the plaque, however I will be visiting the Isle in July or August and I will try and get a photograph for you if you wish, the church is only open for worship every second Sunday so I may have to contact the churchwarden. John
Derek Robertson Posted 8 June , 2007 Author Posted 8 June , 2007 I'm amazed! I posted my original query over 3 years ago! John, I would really appreciate a photograph of you can manage it - THANK YOU.
Hett65 Posted 8 June , 2007 Posted 8 June , 2007 Derek I will get the photograph for you. A few years ago I took a photograph of the War Memorial at the Isle, it is located next to the bowling green. I filed this away, and I have filed it so well that I cannot find it to see if Stewart's name is on the memorial. If I do not find it I will take another photograph of this memorial and forward to you as well as the church photograph. John
