Hello Alibee,

Thanks for replying.

I have had a look at that website and I can't find any mention of this CD. Is it just me being gormless? (probably!)

I don't suppose that you can search by battalion???

I will have a look at my database and ascertain just how cheeky I need to be!

Regards

Andy

The CD is sold by Jane Jones from her webpage, www.ww1photos.com, and on Speedbid. She also sells individual photos. So far I have purchased the following CDs from her:

Officers Died 1916 Part I

Gallipoli

World War One Group Photos

McCorquodale Roll of Honour

British Jewry Book of Honour 1914-1918

They are all quite well done and IIRC are priced at about £7 each.

Hi Andy,

I haven't found a way of searching by battalion. It would make life easier.

As Dick says it is sold by Jane Jones I have also bought quite a few photos from her. She also sells on Ebay. May be worth having a look on their for it as well.

Once you have looked on your database feel free to be cheeky!

Mick,

Nothing on your man I'm afraid. I have had a quick trawl through the CD and have found 2nd Lt Basil Brnard Blackwell 3rd (attd 8th Bn) The Buffs. There is also 2nd Lt E G Routley MC 6th Bn The Buffs. Let me know if you are interested in either.

Andrew,

No luck with either of yours, sorry.

Hi Anthony,

Nothing on Morrell or Wright. I do have something on Swainson but he is down as duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry. Assuming this is the same man I have given his details and attached a photo.

Details as follows:

Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Leonard Swainson DSO

6th Btn Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry

Died on 09/08/1916. Age 39

Son of Joseph and Sarah Swainson, of Stonecross, Kendal.

CORBIE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION Somme France

Hope this helps

Hi Ali,

Thanks for the look-up. This is definitely the same man. Swainson was of the D.C.L.I. until the 25th June 1916, when he took command of the 4th Bn KORL just before their assault on Guillemont on the 8th August 1916.

Incidentally it was during this action that Gabriel Coury won his V.C., carrying the mortally wounded Swainson from the battlefield under ferocious fire that day.

Thanks a lot for your help Ali-delighted with what you found.

Anthony

Guest drapersj

My husband's family were sent a letter by the then Major JL Swainson of DCLI notifying them of his great Uncle being injured in September 1915. It's a kindly worded letter, so he was obviously a thoughtful man. The letter may also have been prompted by the fact that both men were from Westmoreland. Sadly, the great uncle referred to was repatriated from 17th casualty clearing station but died in October in England before making it home to Kendal.

Can anyone tell me where exactly the 17th casualty clearing station was based in September 1915?

Hi Tim,

Sorry for the delay in replying - your man doesn't appear on the CD I am afraid.

If anyone posts requiring lookups and I haven't replied within a couple of days. Give me a kick!! A quick email will do the trick.

Best wishes

Ali
