Ryegate Posted 24 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 24 November , 2007 Chris Find my Past lists only 2 John Thomas', neither in the Northumberland Fusiliers. The two listed are: John Thomas, birthplace Carlisle. Lancashire Fusiliers, No. 51496. KIA 1918 John Thomas, birthplace Hartlepool. Devonshire Regiment No. 31086. KIA 1917 If either of the above could be your John Thomas, let me know and I will post all the details and find the death certificate reference for you. bobdenn Posted 28 November , 2007 Share Posted 28 November , 2007 Hi, Ryegate, I was speaking to an old aunt who is in her 80's but still sharp as a razor. She said her late husband's great nephew was a prisoner of war (POW) in WW1 and served with Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. I have got the following information on him but I would like to know how and where he died and any next of kin if possible? Private William FEENEY No 4309 Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (2nd Btn) Died 16th May 1915 Born Long Tower, Londonderry, N. Ireland. He is mentioned on the Le Touret Memorial. Many thanks Bob DENNIS
Ryegate Posted 28 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 28 November , 2007 Bob I have looked on the part of the 1901 census that is currently available on Emerald Ancestry but as yet, there are very few entries for 1901 so this Feeney family is not amongst those listed. The details for William are: Name: FEENEY, William Regiment, Corps etc.: Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Battalion etc.: 2nd Battalion. Last name: Feeney First name(s): William Initials: W Birthplace: Longtower, Londonderry Enlisted: Strabane Residence: Londonderry Rank: PRIVATE Number: 4309 Date died: 16 May 1915 How died: Killed in action Theatre of war: France & Flanders Supplementary Notes: Death cert. ref: 1915 I.74 118 I am not sure if this will be of much help to you but may give you some extra information you don't already have. Sorry I cannot help with the census but there may be other Forum members who can do a look up for you if you ask the question. regards Ryegate
Simon Ashby Posted 28 November , 2007 Share Posted 28 November , 2007 It would be great if you could look for the certificate for James Cole Sergeant London Regiment (Queens Westminster Rifles 1st / 16th BN) Service No. 565142 Died 4/11/1918 - Killed in action at Sebourg after crossing the Aunelle River Buried Sebourg Communal cemetery or Sebourg British Cemetery Any other ideas of how to continue research on this soilder and the battle he died in would be brilliant. Many thanks Simon
Ryegate Posted 29 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 29 November , 2007 Simon Details for James are as follows: Name: COLE, James Regiment, Corps etc.: London Regiment Battalion etc.: 16th (County of London) Battalion (Queen's Westminster Rifles). Last name: Cole First name(s): James Initials: J Birthplace: Westminster Enlisted: London Residence: Kennington Rank: SERGT. Number: 565142 Date died: 04 November 1918 How died: Killed in action Theatre of war: France & Flanders Supplementary Notes: FORMERLY 4305, 2ND LONDON REGT. Death cert ref: 1918 I.85 408 I have had a look on National Archives for his medal card but there does not appear to be a record for him which is very strange because he most definitely would have been elligible for medals having left the UK. I would suggest you post his name and regiment No. under 'soldiers' and ask for further information regarding the btn whereabouts when James was killed and asking if anyone else could take another look for his medal record. The real experts on this Forum will soon come along, I am sure. Good luck Regards Ryegate
Ryegate Posted 29 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 29 November , 2007 Bob National Archives does hold some POW interviews records and I have checked for William but unfortunately, he is not listed in their database. I have the same problem with a member of my own family who was defintely a POW but for whom, I can find no record. As a last resort I have contacted the Red Cross in Geneva as I understand they hold a complete record of all POWs but you have to be a relative to request a copy. The charge for their search is (if I remember correctly) around £45 per hour and their website states a search can take anything from 1 - 4 hours. They do not acknowledge the application but the website says they do the search and then e-mail to tell you how much it has cost and how to pay. They then release the record once payment has been received. Have you looked at the Long Long Trail? I found a reference to my Grandfather there in the first place so you may be very lucky and at least get confirmation of the information you have been given. It is certainly worth a try before you do anything else. Also Desmond7 was a great help to me when I first joined the Forum and gave me lots of help with my research into my grandfather so I would defintely pm him asking if he can help with information on William. Good luck Regards Ryegate
Sean. Posted 29 November , 2007 Share Posted 29 November , 2007 Hello Ryegate, I wonder if you could help myself and another forum member Jean to track down some information on two men. At the moment we are compiling information on five Cork soldiers who are not on the CWGC memorial, I have obtained death certs for three of them from the Irish GRO and will forward them to Terry in due course, but their search did not turn up any entry for the following two and I was wondering if they are on any of the lists that you may have access too, the dates below are from obituaries in local newspapers. Denis Drummond Pte, Royal Munster Fusiliers, Died August 1915. B Coughlan, Pte Royal Irish Rifles, Died 9th May 1915. Any help will be greatly appreacated, thanks as always, Regards, Sean

Ryegate Posted 30 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 30 November , 2007 Sean I have checked the 'soldiers KIA' database and also the death register but neither of these men are listed. The service records that currently are only available from A-C does not list B Coughlan either although there are other Coughlans. Would you mind just checking that you have the names correct as I have a Denis Coughlan of the Royal Irish Munsters although to be precise he is listed as KIA in Feb 1916. Other than that, there are no Coughlans with an initial B but I do have a D (Coughlan) (D for Daniel in this case). Regards Ryegate
Sean. Posted 30 November , 2007 Share Posted 30 November , 2007 Hello Ryegate, Thank you for searching. These two men are a mystery, the information that we have is from obituary's in the local paper so i presume that it would be right, but we will check them again. I have searched the MIC index as well but they do not show up in that. We have had success with another three but its back to the drawing board with these two. Many thanks for your help.
