In all probablility this is a stupid question...

Was there a height requirement for Officers in the various Guards Regiments?

Any help appreciated,

Cheers. Freddy

hello

not that I know of - was for other ranks

depth of pocket was important for the mess bills........ :)

I suspect that if one was a very short officer the degree of influence needed to get a Guards Commission would be greater

'lo 'lo

So it was possible for a Guards officer to gain his commission at 5'8" say whilst ORs were refused? (If the height limit was e.g. 5'9" at the time)

Kind Regards,

SMJ

So one can rework that hoary (and in its original form very non PC) old joke :

'He's a small officer with vey large privates'

If he'd been an officer in the Indian Army his privates would have been coloured.

Are you suggesting Guards Officers' access to mind-altering substances?

Kind Regards,

SMJ

P.S. I'll get my coat

Kind Regards,

SMJ

When you say, "the whole world...".....

I'll stop now to reduce the danger of unhinging the thread, completely :)

I'll be very interested in the results from your next trip to Kew.

Kind Regards,

SMJ

Thanks - lol.

Having read some of the letters that went back to Eton from the Guards division some of them had to be stoned - chasing beggar women around after tent pegs - all very disturbing.

I'm just looking for a reason someone would have been refused a commission in the Guards in about March 1917. He's not hobbit sized or poor so looks like the answer might lie somewhere else...

When guys are told, thanks but we've got all the officers we need , is that fobbing them off because they don't want them, or could that be genuine? I've seen that a few times.

why shoul d officers heights be in question its the man not his size i served in the guards with officers smaller than me

I saw a reference to height being an issue in some personal correspondence... I didn't know if it was serious or not.
