whitley Posted 24 March , 2008 Share Posted 24 March , 2008 Hello rflory, I am mightily impressed and slightly jealous of your library and hoped you could spare a little time to see if there is any information regarding D Battery 242 Brigade during the period between 18th September 1917 and 20th September just prior to the attack on Polygon Wood. It was during this period that a great uncle, Gunner Walter Oldfield (840621) died after being hit by a shell burst while transporting ammunition to the battery. He died on the night of 19th/20th September. The O.C.D/242 Bde at the time was Major A.C. Stephen. I am especially interested where the battery/Brigade was situated while in support of the attack. rflory Posted 25 March , 2008 Author Share Posted 25 March , 2008 Richard: Before the Echoes Die Away: The Story of a Warwickshire Territorial Gunner Regiment 1892-1969 by NDG James indicates that 242 Brigade, RFA relieved 102 Brigade, RFA at Zillebecke on 14th August 1917 and within a week all of the guns of B Battery had been knocked out. The Brigade remained in action at Zillebecke until 24 October 1917. During that ten week period the Brigade had 181 men killed, wounded or missing and earned six MMs. Regards. I was wondering if given your interest and knowledge of the RFA you could shed any light on the attached picture. As far as I know its taken near Winchester around September 1914 but could be later. In the picture the unit is standing in front of a door on which is written 3/_ HB RFA. Could this be the Hants Battery of the Royal Field Artillery? The people in the photo include a Walter George Hide sitting 3rd from the right in the front row. From his medal record Walter served with the Hampshire Carabiniers and was with them when they converted into infantry and joined the 15th Battalion Hamphire Regiment. In fact I have the cap badges and medals for Walter. However, the problem is that the cap badges on this photo do not match either of these later units. The closest I have seen is the First Hants RGA Volunteers. Walter was under age when he joined up at the start of the war. I'm looking for a link between the RGA or RFA and the Hampshire Carabiniers. Is that the same ammunition column as the 6th Howitzer Brigade's ammunition column which was part of the 2nd Division? I am looking for a B.S.C. Thompson who I believe was a lieutenant. Edit: He is listed in the Times as a Battery Sgt Major given rank of Temp Lieut from Oct 1916. Canadian War Diaries on line have him in 6th Field Artillery Brigade in October 1916 and transferred to 7th Field Artillery Brigade D 21st Howitzer Battery. Several shells fell near, one damaging No. 3 gun. In the afternoon, about 1.30 o'clock, the same battery again opened fire at the railways on the north and north-east side of the position. Two shells of this series fell in the chateau grounds, one of them bursting three yards from the canteen and wounding Corporal H. Colenutt, Gunners J. Glennie, and J. Hilditch. Gunner A. Baldwin was seriously wounded by this shell and died before reaching the field ambulance. He was buried at Philosophe Cemetery near to Gunner Clutterbuck." The only reference to him in Second Canadian Divisional Ammunition Column and Its Part in the Great World War is: "transferred to 7th Brigade, CFA on 20 October 1916." 2. Canadian Artillery Officers Who Served Overseas indicates that he served in England with the following units: 6th Bde, CFA, 8 How Bde, CFA, Reserve Bde, CFA; and CAR Depot; and in France and Flanders with the following units: 6th Bde, CFA; 2 DAC and 7 Bde. It shows that he had no decorations and no wounds. 3. 7th Brigade, CFA was absorbed in the reorganization of March 1917 and as far as I can tell did not reappear. 4. As he appears to have served in France and Flanders with 7th Brigade, CFA after he served with 6th Brigade, CFA and 2nd DAC it would appear that he went on leave in January 1917 and never returned to that theater. 5. There do not appear to be papers available for him in the Canadian Archives. 6. He does not appear in the list of Canadian officers in the November 1918 Army List, but he does appear in the January 1919 Canadian Militia List. 7. I wonder if he maybe went on leave in England in January 1917 and got sick or injured and invalided out? Sorry I could not do better. I would be interested to know whether their history says a. Anything about 122nd HB b. Their location on the Somme and also generally how much detail the history goes into daily life - or is it rather a record of moves, personnell changes etc?? He ends up in Ireland in the early 1920s as an Army Instructional Officer and as a Battery Commander in the Artillery Corps in the late 1920s. He went to France & was at the Somme. I have been researching to try to find out where they served and in what batteries/brigades. Attached is the info I have to date. Its not much. I have his MIC but there is no surviving service record. I have been to the Archives but they could not help. The artillery museum cant help either! You have a reference listed for the West Riding Artillery so I hope you can shed some light when you have some time. I notice you have a history of 1/1 Hants RFA am I right that this is the same battery that served with the 1/5 Lowland Bde RHA and is this the book published by the local Southampton newspaper? And you guessed it does the book mention Newlyn. battiscombe Posted 17 August , 2008 Share Posted 17 August , 2008 Dick you may be able to help with this as you seem to have a remarkable RFA database and library: do you any information on a Lt (later Major) Peter Wright kia 1918 with B/186 Bde - his MIC says he went to France 19/1/1915 ........(commissioned from Inns of Court OTC) ... I believe he may be the same Lt P Wright who was posted to 36th BAC 26/1/1915; then 15/36th Bde .. and was wounded in march 1915. I was wondering if you have any information on Peter Wright - when commisioned, for example, and later postings 1915-1918. .. which might help confirm these are one and the same .. any assistance welcome David Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
