Welcome to the Forum.

The first step is for you to read the info on the mother site of this forum. Click on 'The Long Long Trail' at the top left of the screen and go to 'Grandad's War'.

When you have read all the info on how to trace your grandad, come back here for more help.

Good luck with your quest.

Hi,

Mr Leighton's name doesn't sound too common (and by that I mean of frequent occurance :D ) so in theory it should be relatively easy to find him in the medal index card system at the Public Records Office, if he served overseas during the First World War. Better than searching for a Harry Smith (my own g-granddad)! Of course he may well have been RN / RM...

Follow Terry's advice and read the 'Long long trail' and we'll do our best to help you.

Rgds,

Alex.

Hi Paul,

welcome to the forum aswell.

Is is posible your Eric Leighton could have been born in Burnley and then moved down to the London area?

all the best

Probably a silly thing to say, but I did look on SDGW and Eric Robert Leighton is not listed.

Hi Paul

Also, this may not be of much help at all but I thought I would mention it anyway.

If you have an approximate age of your man, have you tried looking at either 1881, 1891 or 1901 Census records for London/Middlesex? I know it's nothing to do with WW1 but it may help if you find an Eric Robert Leighton with a son, Eric Robert Leighton living in London, it would also give you a rough idea of the age and birth place of both, together with mother's details and any other family members. This may then help with any WW1 research if there should happen to be two of them on the Medal Roll or MIC

I know someone with a copy of the 1881 Census, so next time I see them I will have a look for him if you like?

I wish you all the best of luck with your search.

Paul

Just a quick update, I have looked at the 1901 Census online and found an Eric Leighton, aged 15, born in Bedford Park, Middlesex in the Civil Parish of Chiswick, am unable to access any further details as yet but will post on here if I find anything.

SDGW is Soldiers Died in the Great War....

1901 census online is a good place as was said earlier www.census.pro.gov.uk and also FreeBMD (births marriages and deaths).. to access go to google.com and type FreeBMD in and follow the link, you may get help that way.

Any problems just post em here they will all chip in. Its how I started!!
