HI

You may know me from the GMIC forum.

I am looking for a picture of a uniformed Leutnant der Reserve der Matrosenartillerie. I know it is a bit specific but have not been able to find something similar on the internet yet. My greatgrandfathers cousin was a pilot athe SFA in Varna during WWI. His full career (from the WAST)

02.09.1916 Bulgarian Militair Verdienst Kreuz (a picture of this one anyone?)

23.07.1917 Eiserne Kreuze I. Klasse,

23.03.1918 Bulgarian Seeflieger Abzeichen (a picture of this one?)

23.03.1918 Osmanischer Halbmond (which I guess is the read star like equivalent of the EKI, right?)

22.08.1914 Diensteintritt im Freiwillige Marine Flieger Korps (Berlin-Johannisthal), II Seeflieger-Abteilung (SFA): 31.07.1915 Obermatrose, dann Bootmannsmaat, 11.1915 Flugmaat, 06.11.1915-03.12.1915 Seeflieger-Station (SFS) Borkum, wo er mit dem Friedrichshafen FF 29a (Seeaufklärer) Nummer 419 flog, 23.01.1916-12.10.1916 und 01.05.1917-16.06.1917 I. Dienstzeit bei der Luftwaffe

So most specifically I am actually looking for just a picture of any of the uniforms Wilhelm may have worn

Hope you can help me out here!!

Hi David,

first find attached a picture from Gallipoli, where you can see a German Lt from the Matrosenartillerie in the Turkish battledress (center with the cross) and on the right side a Lt in his class A. The navy pilots had the same uniform...

Now see the medals...

The Türkische Kriegsmedaille was also named as the Eiserner Halbmond by the German soldiers and Gallipoli Star by the Allied. The Türkische Kriegsmedaille existed only in one stage and was - but only very vage - comparable with the Eiserne Kreuz II. Klasse, which was the lowest stage of the Iron Cross. It was founded 1st March 1915 by Sultan Mehmed Reschad V.. The attached medal belonged to Major Serno, who supported mainly the development of the Turkish Air Corps 1914 - 1918.

The following "medal parade" belonged also to Major Serno, with the Eiserne Kreuz II. Klasse to the left. The Eiserne Kreuz I. Klasse was only worn without band direct at the uniformjacket.

The second and third from the right are the other Turkish war medals. The second from right is the Imtiaz-Medaille. It was founded in 1883 by Sultan Hamid II. for bravery.

The third from right is the Liakat-Medaille, which was founded by Sultan Abdul II. 22. April 1891.

Both medals were available in threee stages bronce, silver and gold as well with sabres (like on the picture)

It would be interesting to learn, where your guy got all the Turkish medals. I assume, that he was flying in Gallipoli for a while in the Wasserfliegerabteilung 1, which had mainly Gotha waterplanes.
