Dolphin Posted 28 July , 2007 Share Posted 28 July , 2007 Cnock Lt H N S Skeffington and Lt A C Malloch were flying in DH 4 A7448 of No 57 Sqn RFC when they failed to return from a bombing raid on Inglemunster on 28 July 1917. Lt Skeffington was killed, and Lt Malloch wounded and taken prisoner when the DH 4 was shot down. A victory was credited to Oblt Eduard von Dostler of Jasta 6; it was the 19th or 20th of his eventual 26 victories. I hope that this is useful. josquin Posted 2 October , 2018 Share Posted 2 October , 2018 Cnock, I just saw this thread today. Here is some information in addition to the biographical sketch on the Charterhouse Memorial site. Herbert Neville Southwell Skeffington, R.F.C. Special Reserve, joined the Australian Imperial Forces as an engineer and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant on Probation in the R.F.C. on 23 October 1916 (as per London Gazette), a Flying Officer on 22 June 1917, and confirmed as Flying Officer on 12 July 1917 (both as per London Gazette). He was posted to 57 Squadron on 18 July 1917, only 10 days prior to being killed in action on 28 July 1917. Some interesting discrepancies exist in the records, however. Charterhouse states that his birth occurred in 1884, but does not give a birthplace, but a passenger list recording travel from Melbourne, Australia to London, in 1912, states his age as 41 and lists an estimated birthdate of 1871. He may have been older than Charterhouse or the Commonwealth armed forces believed him to be, and the absence of a birth record (that I could locate, at any rate) leaves the question open as to whether he was 33 or 46 years old on 28 July 1917.
