Guest Belinda Posted 3 January , 2004 Posted 3 January , 2004 My name is Belinda. My grandmother Dorothy Cecilia Barnes was born June 1918 in London. She was brought up being told that her real father's name was M V Barnes who died in the First World War before she was born. That is the only piece of information she was given. Is this enough to be able to locate information about him? I have searched marriage records with no luck. If he died overseas would his death be recorded in England somewhere? Please help. Sincerely Belinda
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 3 January , 2004 Posted 3 January , 2004 Belinda Could he be any of these men? http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/results.a...900&yearto=2000 Dave
Chris_Baker Posted 3 January , 2004 Posted 3 January , 2004 Hello Belinda, welcome to the forum. According to "Soldiers Died in the Great War", 39324 Pte Matthew Barnes, Royal Army Medical Corps, who died on 9 October 1917, was born and enlisted in the parish of Saint Pancras in London. No place details are given for 20924 L/Cpl Middleton Barnes of the 3rd Grenadier Guards. All the other "possibles" came from places outside London.
Max Posted 3 January , 2004 Posted 3 January , 2004 As Belindas Grandmother was born in June 1918 and the father was killed prior to this, nature determines that he could have only been one of two people (dependant on the info on CWGC being correct). 39324 Pte Mathew Barnes RAMC, died 9/10/1917 or S/27004 Rifleman M.H.Barnes, Rifle Brigade, died 1/4/1918 Andy

Sue Light Posted 3 January , 2004 Posted 3 January , 2004 Hallo Belinda Assuming that your great grandparents had married, what name is given on your grandmother's birth certificate for her father? That should give you his full names which might confirm the search. Regards - Sue
