How's about this - was he known as Ernest, but it was his middle name?

Can't find any Appleford on CWGC anyone able to do SDGW?

Like you, I could find no trace of Ernest Appleford on CWGC.

There is an Ernest Appleford on the Medal indexes but he is in the Hampshires.

There is an Ernest Appleford dying in the first qtr. Jan/feb/Mar/ 1917 in Fareham, Hampshire on the civilian St. Catherine's Index, 2b 1000.

But this would mean that he died of non war- related causes, not in service and fairly early in the war - so not in the later flu epidemic (although the 1917 could be interpreted as 1919) - and yet we have this wonderful clear photo of Ernest Appleford.

There does seem to be an alteration to the first letter of the first name & so I wonder if it was labelled later and there is doubt about the Christian name.

Or - what if it is Ernest Appleyard?? which I haven't looked for.

I agrre there seems no connection to the artillery and completly different date, perhaps as suggested died when out of service through discharge?

No Appleyard or Appleford died that date on SDGW. No Applefords at all on SDGW in RGA/RFA and only 4 Appleyards. Died out of service seems the most logical as said.

Ernest Appleford age 23 death registered in FARHAM 1st qtr 1917 ( Ancestry .co) Ernest Appleford birth registered in Newbury 1893 (Freebmd). are Fareham and Newbury close by? Ralph.

This seems like the correct details, will check the previous mic to see if a discharge date is shown, might get lucky.

Distance isnt that far from each other

Just looking at the postcard again: does it say USA studios? It's not THE USA, is it?

or was that the name of a British Studios of the time.

He certainly looks as if he is in the RGA, cap badge etc., although the badge looks not quite right. (maybe its the light reflecting on it though).

Well done Phil.

Hope wulsten can get to the bottom of it. would like to know more on this chap now.

Susan.

PS found the following on another forum by Googling USA studio

"USA studios" were a British photographers - first around in 1907 apparently, up to and during ww1 (well, must have been or else Ernest would not have been "sitting" - silly me!!).. Apparently 8+ in London and 5 in the provinces.

Wonderful Wulsten. Let's hope this is your man. Looks as if everything fits. Yes, you can just about see where a line for number 1 may have been.

Smashing news.

Can't wait for outcome. Fingers crossed for this man.

Susan.

Speen is just over the border from Hampshire; Cosham (which is just to the north of Portsmouth) is about an hour's drive away.

Please find reply and have offered forwarding of the original postcard back to the family,

Dear Geoff,

Many thanks for the information and the photo, I will add it to the web page

with a citation to you - can you give me your last name?

Ernest was a 2nd cousin twice removed to me, so fairly distant.

I have little info on him, but, I will email the researcher who gave me that

information, and provide him with your email, in case he wants to get in

touch with you - he may have more information than I have.

Once again, many thanks for getting in touch, photos are always a joy - I

don't have too many of my ancestors, but am always happy to put up those

from the collateral lines -

Regards

Geoff

That is a very satisfying development and your interest and search for information has had a good result.

A distant relative of Ernest Appleford has seen his photograph and the information that you have.

  • 1 year later...

Wulsten, if you don't mind I'll do that. There are some sherlocks who hang around there who may have missed this so far.
