CWGC burials in Britain

Terry,

I notice when researching CWWG burials in cemeteries in britain, most of which are just ordinary cemeteries rather than military ones, that there is a minimal description of the cemetery, compared to the descriptions of cemeteries elsewhere.

Is there any intention of remedying this in the future? As a foreigner, I would appreciate information about these cemeteries, most of which are not described elsewhere online

Perhaps us boys, and, girls, here in Blighty could help.If you give us the name of said cemeteries. Then, perhaps we could tell you more about them.We may even be able and willing to send you pictures of cemeteries or even individual graves.I WILL BE MORE THAN WILLING TO DO THIS FOR bristol somerset gloucestershire AND SURROUNDING AREAS.

TerryDenham does have copies of the old CWGC registers mostly published in th 20s,but ,it must be said that the descriptions given are often cursary.

Dont be afraid to ask we will do our best.

CHEERS.

JOHN. :D

There's a thread where UK based Pals volunteered to photo graves/memorials in their locality. Can't find it at the moment but it's there somewhere. Maybe volunteers would also describe the cemetery for you.

You are right that some of the descriptions are the barest minimum or non-existant. Even in the old registers there was little more than appears on the website and much of that was out of date. Hence it was not transferred.

There are 12,363 cemeteries on the CWGC list in the UK. Most are churchyards and small cemeteries. Nothing was ever written about these.

One of the quirks of CWGC's organisation is that the Records Department is not responsible for producing these descriptions! That lies elsewhere within the organisation - a fact which complicates the process.

The overseas cemetery descriptions have largely been updated and improved but there has been insufficient time and cash to do the same for the UK so far - although out of date info has been removed.

Also I have recently undertaken an exercise relating to all the 'Unknown' war graves in the UK - many of which were not mentioned in the cemetery intros and when they were also contained several errors of total and description. These have now all been corrected and will appear at the next update.

It is a fact that there will be little to say about some locations but I hope that the situation will improve with better descriptive text in due course.

Take a look at the British War Memorial Project site. They may have a photo & description of the cems your looking at. The site is not yet at full swing, but if you cant find what your looking for, e-mail them and they will try and get it.

I take it you're interested in whether soldiers were buried in family plots etc - you want wider local info. to put people in context (?).

Otley Museum, West Yorkshire has recorded every tombstone in both the redundant Parish Church and mixed denomination 'overflow' graveyards in the town. These registers, compiled by volunteers, are alphabetic, by plot area and contain tombstone details on CWGC graves. In many cases soldiers names were added to family tombs and a CWGC grave added.

Soldiers can be further explored in the museum's name index and other resources.

Not necessarily pertinent to you, but a good advert.
