MBrockway Posted 7 August , 2007 Author Share Posted 7 August , 2007 Mark, Good stuff. On the inside cover of my copy it has:- To Janet & Stephen From The White Family May 1919. Andy Andy - the scanned copy from Canada has this tantalisingly incomplete inscription: I think the scanned zone didn't go out right the way to the margins How nice to have the direct connection with Malcolm White's family of your copy. stiletto_33853 Posted 3 November , 2007 Share Posted 3 November , 2007 Mark, A couple more shots of Evelyn that have come to light, not sure how these will come out with the resizing needed to get them within Forum limits but if you need full size copies let me know. Oxford Eight, 1907, Evelyn (Stroke) is on the far right.

marina Posted 3 November , 2007 Share Posted 3 November , 2007 Thanks for those, Andy. It's sad to see them as boys, knowing what is to come. Marina
thunderbird Posted 24 May , 2011 Share Posted 24 May , 2011 Here's an interesting snippet from De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour. It's a biography of Sergt Robert Philip Thomson, describing how Thomson was binding the wounds of Lt Southwell when both were hit and killed during the attack on the 15th Sept 1916. http://www.archive.org/stream/rollofhonourbiog02ruvi#page/266/mode/2up
MBrockway Posted 14 September , 2013 Author Share Posted 14 September , 2013 Oxford Eight, 1908, Evelyn is 2nd from the right on the lower row. Andy Alister Kirby (third from left sitting next to Evelyn) was also commissioned into The Rifle Brigade. Like Southwell, he was an Eton wet bob and at Magdalen. He won an Olympic gold medal at Stockholm in 1912 rowing in the Leander VIII. Although racing as Leander, eight of the nine in the boat were from Magdalen College, Oxford. MBrockway Posted 2 August , 2014 Author Share Posted 2 August , 2014 Evelyn Southwell <snip> Spare man for the Olympic Crew 1908 Andy Southwell was spare man for the 1908 Great Britain (Magdalen College BC) Olympic gold medal winning Coxless IV Great Britain entered another Coxless IV from Leander, who they met in the Final. GB (Magdalen) won Gold by 1.5 lengths, though it should be noted that half of the GB (Leander) crew had already raced and won Gold in the Coxless Pair at 12:30pm that same afternoon! MBrockway Posted 2 August , 2014 Author Share Posted 2 August , 2014 G.D.B.M. Mark Andy Indeed! Made worse by the fact that three others from the Magdalen Summer VIII won Gold in the GB VIII rowing as Leander, while as far as I can see New College were not represented. Forton Posted 3 August , 2014 Share Posted 3 August , 2014 Hi FYI, you may be interested to know that there are several privately taken images of Southwell in France in my new book 'Tommy's War'. They were taken by a fellow 9th Battalion officer named Polgreen and show Southwell in front of Delville Wood just before he was killed. Also an image of him with fellow officers at the end of August following exhausting days in the line. All best Richard
stiletto_33853 Posted 3 August , 2014 Share Posted 3 August , 2014 Hi Richard, Would be very interested in the pictures of Evelyn you mention, he is one of the officers I have spent a lot of time with. Andy
MBrockway Posted 3 August , 2014 Author Share Posted 3 August , 2014 Richard - as would I. Southwell is a special interest of mine going back to 1972 and standing by his memorial window while waiting for a serious dressing down for being late for school morning service. Thinking of The Somme and his sacrifice helped me keep things in perspective. It's only later that I found I ended up having so much more in common with him. I'd greatly appreciate copies of these pictures if possible. Cheers, Mark
MBrockway Posted 3 August , 2014 Author Share Posted 3 August , 2014 Andy, I spotted separate photos of Evelyn Southwell and Malcolm White (individually, not together) in Anthony Seldon and David Walsh's Public Schools & The Great War, subject of a long thread elsewhere on the Forum. One of them was IIRC, Malcolm with the Headmaster of Shrewsbury, but I might have that wrong - I was browsing the book in a bookshop! The other was a profile shot of Evelyn Southwell smoking. I don't think I'd seen either photo before. Cheeers, Mark
