Remembered Today:

'Captain C. Darbyshire RFC Killed 1915'

In the final stages of inputting the names for 1914-16 onto the Bury Virtual War Memorial, the appendices at the back of each volume of the 'Book of Honour', which list the men for whom the Bury Times did not have a photograph are, as expected. yielding a fair number of mystery men who can't be traced on CWGC or SDGW. One of them is: 'Captain C. DARBYSHIRE (35), formerly of Bury, of the Royal Flying Corps, was killed in 1915.' I can find no trace of him, nor variant spellings.

It's a long shot Mark - but Ancestry has a death registered in Marylebone in the second quarter of 1915 of a 36 year old Charles Darbyshire

He seems to be the only one on there to fit the bill

If you are interested in ordering the certificate the ref was Vol 1a, page 771

Good Luck

Sue

Thanks for the replies. This former LF Officer sounds like the bloke. The question is , why does the Bury Times record him as being killed?

Another real long shot Mark - but weren't the first Zeppelin raids over London in mid 1915 - did they have a blackout like in WW2 - could he have been killed in an accident - or even a raid??

Cheers

Sue

He's not listed in the comprehensive Airmen Died in the Great War, so perhaps he was no longer with the RFC at the time of his death.
