Elainesheppard Posted 9 July , 2007 Share Posted 9 July , 2007 I am researching William Jacklin, he was a gunner in the royal artillery, no. 80423. Is there some where that I can find information about when and where he fought. As he was a survivor info seems more difficult to find. Elaine. shaymen Posted 9 July , 2007 Share Posted 9 July , 2007 Elaine Welcome to the forum. You can download his Medal Index Card (costs £3.50) http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...;resultcount=13 Initially it will only tell you what you already know, but it will give you his medal roll numbers which then can be checked (only at the NA, not online) to hopefully establish which unit of thr Artillery he seved with. From that info you can then start looking for the relevant war diary. Glyn
ALANJONES Posted 9 July , 2007 Share Posted 9 July , 2007 Elaine your best bet to start is to try and find his medal records http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...line/medals.asp Also go to the top of Forum page and go to the Long, Long Trail where you will get much useful information on tracing a soldier. The medal details can give ranks, theatre served and date arrived - sometimes the background info can also give the unit. His service records may be at the National Archives at Kew [these are being progressively put on line on the subscription website of ancestry.co.uk but they have a way to go to reach the 'Js' - but in any case only some 40% of the records have survived. Hope that gets you started! alan sorry my message was typed as shaymen posted his.....................
