Sorted out my scanning, found the descreening button, made half tones much better.

I'm going link in groups as they are in the book, Michael Wilson, Baltic Assignment, British Submariners in Russia: 1914-1919 ISBN 0-436-57801-8, 1985 Leo Cooper.

Between pages 84 -85 part 1

Hi Matt,

just a few notes on the photos, photo #3 is a D class sub and not E19. Photo #4 is E19 all iced up. Photo#5, this shows E18 arriving at Dagerort, when identifying herself to the Russian destroyer and E9 she was told to display a small square flag followed by a pennant which this photo clearly shows.

Photo# 7 shows a Russian Signalman or Telegraphist closest to camera waiting for his medal. Photo # 9, Crew shot of E19 shows Telegraphist Benson, standing third from our left and signalman Garrod standing third from our right.

Hoe this is of interest.

Cheers Darren.

Interesting about the photos, my aunt's husband's mother's uncle.. was Commodore G. von Schoultz who I believe was trying to buy the subs in 1918 for 5 million. Checked his book but couldn't find anything. I'm sure the books on Sveaborg have photos of them or the exhibitions on Sveaborg had photos', will check some more.

Hi Sadsac,

When you look into the papers of Charles William Turrall #204563 of E18 would you think he was originally on other E class subs?

On another note, the first draft of Rating that arrived in England on the 28-1-1917 from the Baltic were the following, Stoker PO Henry W.Aldridge from E9, Ldg Sig. Alfred J.Burtenshaw from E9, Ldg Stoker William J.Cook from E9, Petty Officer Arthur W. Davey from E1, Ldg Smn James C. Evans from E9, ERA John F. Fairhall from E1, Chief Stoker James (Joe) Langford from E1, Ldg Smn Alfred J. Millyard from E9, Chief Petty Officer Frederick W.New from E1, Ldg Stoker William E.Newbound from E8, Stoker Sidney A.Trimmer from E1, and Sig Albert E. Robinson from E18.

My grandmother has always told me her father, E18's Albert Edward Robinson, was sick in Petrograd and when this group was returning home they were told to go back and pick him up on their way through, they were told to be extremely careful when going through Petrograd to get him, in her words they were told to get him out of Petrograd due to the rising unrest. I have no idea how this group got back to England as there is no record i know of. The Sub museum has a photo of this group once landed in England. E9's Burtenshaw is wearing 3 medals, one a cross. The man standing next to him is unidentified but is the only other one wearing the same cross, i have also identified him in a crew photo of E1's. So any idea which of those listed above from E1 won a cross, either Trimmer or Davey? Those that are identified in the photo from E1 with no medals on are New, Langford and Fairhall.

Hope this is of interest.

Darren.
