bierlijn Posted 4 July , 2007 Share Posted 4 July , 2007 Lastly, three ships photographed in Malta Valetta harbour, 8th or 9th March 1915.
Bob H Posted 4 July , 2007 Share Posted 4 July , 2007 These are all French ships. The first one is a Danton class battleship The second I think is a Bisson class destroyer. In the third photo, the closest ship is a Courbet class Dreadnought battleship. Behind her is a Danton class battleship. Regards Bob
Bob H Posted 5 July , 2007 Share Posted 5 July , 2007 The Danton class battleship in the first photo may be the Mirabeau. I have found a photo on this page: Mirabeau which shows her with two white bands on her fore funnel. Regards Bob
bierlijn Posted 5 July , 2007 Author Share Posted 5 July , 2007 Superb stuff. So when the Royal Naval transports pulled into Valetta Harbour at around 3.30pm on 8th March 1915, they found a French squadron already in residence, with battleship Mirabeau (The funnel banding seems conclusive), a second Danton class battleship moored mid-harbour, a Courbet class battleship, an Amiral Charner class cruiser (see 2nd post), and at least one destroyer. In the top picture, the big one has paddle wheel tugs fore, aft and midships, so it must be on the move. Case closed. Thanks everyone!
