Remembered Today:

Independence Day

As far as I know there were no US troops involved in the Palestine campaign

However, by July 1918 they had at last entered the fray on the allied side

[edit to clarify (see also Steve 's post below of 04/07/2018)

The USA declared war on Germany in April 1917 and on Austria-Hungary in December 1917

Following the US declaration against German, the Ottoman Empire severed diplomatic relations with the US on 20th April 1917

Diplomatic relations with the US were resumed by Turkey in February 1927]

and on the 4th, General Allenby took time off to celebrate with them at the American Colony in Jerusalem

Happy 4th July Michael and thanks for the post.

What a super picture.

Can anyone identify the other officers and dignitaries in the pic? Who on earth is the lady in the black, for instance?

Kind Regards,

SMJ

P.S. What is LoC? Library of....Congress?

Simon,

Yes, LoC = Library of Congress

Sorry that I cannot help with any of the names, appart from Allenby

The white haired lady dressed in black may well be a member of the Spafford family [pos. Mrs Anna Spafford (d.1923)]

who founded the colony, but that is only a guess

Here is a link to a further site describing their work & life in WWI

I have seen a reference to an American liaison officer attached to either the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade or the Australian & New Zealand (or Anzac) Mounted Division.

Do you think he is demonstrating a newly imported dance-step routine to Allenby?

Maybe worthy of a cartoon caption competition!

Mates,

I am aware of an American Red Cross unit operating in Egypt/Palestine in 1918 as one of my AIF Camel Corps soldiers who was of US nationality transfered to them late in the war.

Cheers

Thanks Terry; if you see the ref again then let us know who/where/when

Steve; did you follow the links provided via post # 3 ?

The American Colony administered six Turkish military hospitals in Jerusalem

It is conceivable that they continued providing such a service after the allied occupation

Where was your chap transferred to? Jerusalem or somewhere else?

regards

Michael

Out of interest is the building still standing in Jerusalem?

It seems highly likely that the building (or at least some of it) still exists as part of the American Colony Hotel
