Remembered Today:

261st Siege Battery

Recommended Posts

I am looking for information regarding the history of the 261st Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Is there a War Diary in existence for the 261st?

My grandfather James G. Scott served in the 261st through 1919.

Unfortunately the War Diary of the 261st Siege Battery has not been traced. The battery went to France in Feb 17 armed with four 8" Howitzers and joined the 66th Heavy Artillery Group (HAG) on 19 Feb 17. It transferred to 72 HAG on 20 Apr 17; to 77 HAG on 21 May 17; and to 56 HAG on 22 Jun 17. It was made up to 6 howitzers on 6 Jul 17 by personnel from the 373rd Siege Battery. The battery joined 65 HAG on 3 Aug 17 and was attached to XVII Corps Heavy Artillery from 19 to 27 Oct 17. It tranferred to 90 HAG on 28 Oct 17; to 78 HAG on 16 Nov 17 and to 4th Heavy Artillery Brigade on 24 Nov 17.

Many thanks for this informtation. Luckily I have a panoramic photo of the 261st; otherwise I would not even know in what group my grandfather served. Once again, thank you for such a quick reply.

Best Regards,

Paul Scott

Just seen this thread and by chance I am researching men on my local memorial

And this chap is on -

Daniel Slater

Born in Whittle le Woods, living at Penwortham

Died of Wounds : 16 July 1917

Reg no - 123740

Enlisted at Preston

France and Flanders

Rank : Gunner

261st Siege Bty

Royal Garrison Artillery

Son of J. W. and G. Slater, of 3, Caton Terrace, Lostock Hall, Preston.

His Father would have AT REST inscribed on the gravestone

He is buried at Dozinghem military cemetery, Poperinge

I wonder if anyone may have any other information regarding this units whereabouts as of his death
