I am trying to understand the composition and order of battle for Light Infantry units during WW1 (Guernsey L.I., DLI, Somerset LI) I know they had 4 Coy's per Bn, but would like to know what else was part of the Battalion ORBAT.

Example(s)

Trench & Mortar Pl, Scouts & Sniper Pl. Machine Gun Pl. any others ? are these correct? where they under a HQ Coy? How many Buglar's per platoon etc...

Technical help here would be welcome.

Mark.

The establishment of British light infantry battalion during World War I was the same as that of any other infantry battalion, with four companies and a small battalion headquarters section.

At the start of the war, each battalion also had a machinegun section, of two (later four) Vickers or Maxim guns. These, however, were eventually consolidated into brigade machine gun companies.

There were no mortars within the battalion.
