Paul Reed Posted 23 December , 2003 Share Posted 23 December , 2003 This one has eluded me for many years. I bought this postcard 15+ years ago (the price on the back is "10p", so it shows just how long!). The reverse reads: "Alexandria, Egypt, 12-3-19. To dear Ethel, with fondest love from Charlie" But what unit are they - I have never seen this badge anywhere else or in any book on cap badges. What is it!? First, full size photo. Paul Reed Posted 23 December , 2003 Author Share Posted 23 December , 2003 Next close up of badge. The closest I can describe this as is like the 'G' in the title of the 70s comedy programme 'The Goodies' (showing my age now ). Any ideas?! Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 23 December , 2003 Share Posted 23 December , 2003 Paul, Any chance of blowing uo the shoulder title? Being round 3 options spring to mind: 1. Hertfordshire Regt 2. 5th Bn Seaforth Highlanders 3. Northamptonshire Yeomanry I think no. 3! Ian
Paul Reed Posted 23 December , 2003 Author Share Posted 23 December , 2003 Only problem is that none of them ever served in Egypt in 1919; the title is not right for any of them either. It is very similar in appearance to WW1 SA titles. I'll have a go at blowing up the title tomorrow. It is not a run of the mill unit, I suspect. AndrewThornton Posted 23 December , 2003 Share Posted 23 December , 2003 Paul Could the men be members of 1st Cape Coloured Corps, that served with 53rd (Welsh) Division in Palestine from 1918?
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 24 December , 2003 Share Posted 24 December , 2003 If they were South African, the badge probably shows a springbok in a circular design and that would be the SA General Service Corps badge.
Paul Reed Posted 24 December , 2003 Author Share Posted 24 December , 2003 It is definitely not a general SA badge, but it might be Cape Coloured. I hadn't realised they served with the 53rd (Welsh) Division. This is a close up of the title - as best as I can get it!
Paul Reed Posted 9 January , 2004 Author Share Posted 9 January , 2004 Excuse me flagging this one up again, but I posted it over Christmas when we all had other things on our minds. If anyone has any further thoughts, I would be grateful, as I'm still no nearer to finding out what this badge is.

Ivor Lee Posted 10 January , 2004 Share Posted 10 January , 2004 Paul Looking at Cox (Military Badges of the British Empire 1914 - 1918) the cap badge certainly looks like the Cape Corps. Shoulder title also correct format for them.
Ivor Lee Posted 10 January , 2004 Share Posted 10 January , 2004 Christine What a fascinatng article about the plaques particularly as the South African Government stopped the award of medals to coloured troops from their country.
