You know when you can often work something out from the fact that you have come across it before? Well, heres one I cant!! Someone has sent me a snippet of a document that I simply do not recognise

post-1637-1178739297.jpg

The unit recorded on the fourth line is 53 Bedfordshire. Any thoughts on what the one below is? "... Coy, 31st ..."??? Looks like a late war or post war unit as it is a high six digit number and he emigrated to Auss in 1920/21.

Cheers

Hmmmn, could well be. Assuming the unit is after the 53rd Beds (as it seems to be) it must have been late in the war. Will pass the info on and see if it fits! Thanks very much

Steve

I read it as G Coy. 31st Garr(ison) B(attalio)n.

Rather than being a Great War reference could it be a later reference to his 'Australian' service during WW2? The Garrison Battalions were, I believe, raised for home defence from old soldiers much like the Home Guard etc. here. I'm sure one of our resident Aussies can confirm this.

Hope this helps.

Steve
