Guest Jason Muxworthy Posted 9 May , 2007 Share Posted 9 May , 2007 Royal Welsh Fusiliers (RWF) traditionally recruited up in North Wales, South Wales Borderers recruitment was around the borders of Wales and England - Brecon being where their HQ was. Rhondda valley would have been Welsh Regiment as they raised two battalions 10th and 13th. Cardiff had a battalion the 16th and Carmarthenshire was the 15th. 10th & 11th South Wales Borderers were also known as the 1st and 2nd Gwent battalions - both raised in Brecon. 14th, 16th & 17th RWF was raised in Llandudno. 19th Welsh Regt (Glamorgan Pioneers) was formed in Colwyn Bay. 13th RWF raised at Rhyl by the Denbigh and Flint TA 15th RWF raised in London. These cover what formed the majority of the battalions in the 38th Welsh Regiment, also see the book Kitcheners Army by Ray Westlake.
Bernard_Lewis Posted 10 May , 2007 Share Posted 10 May , 2007 Swansea Battalion was formed following an appeal in 1914 by the then Mayor of Swansea, T.T.Corker. His eldest son, Frank, died on a trench raid while serving with the battalion. Bernard
Scalyback Posted 11 May , 2007 Author Share Posted 11 May , 2007 Tafski Thank you. Intreasting stuff. Jason Very informatitive. Ah brecon was based there for TA service. You can feel the history in the barracks. Bernard So swansea where PALS type BTN? Always sad with a child being killed before you. Thank you all for the help. Just waiting to see the family next couple of days for the "paperwork" So far family "rumour" has my grandfather having argument with his father and catching the train to barry docks to enlist. Not sure why he did't enlist in merthyr. To close to home? Who can say?
Bernard_Lewis Posted 11 May , 2007 Share Posted 11 May , 2007 Swansea was a Pals type battalion - many who joined worked together and lived close to each other. The ex Mayor actually died suddenly, a few months before his son went missing (his body was never found). Bernard
Scalyback Posted 11 May , 2007 Author Share Posted 11 May , 2007 Bernard Great website. Very informatitive. Pals idea was good, serve together. The aftermath after was the problem. Checked and my grand dad did't serve with 14th then. Its a start. Itching to get the paperwork to track him down if I can. Why run to barry of all places! Bernard_Lewis Posted 12 May , 2007 Share Posted 12 May , 2007 Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the website. As you say, he's not on it, probably didn't serve with it but bear in mind that I don't have a full nominal roll (yet). As for Barry - maybe he went there to work? Big docks (I think), railways plus other industries. A busy place at that time and not far from the hub that was Cardiff. Bernard
