brindlerp Posted 20 December , 2003 Share Posted 20 December , 2003 "Field Marshal Montgomery recorded that on mobilisation (the procedure that takes place when an army move from peace to war) in August 1914, when he was a young officer with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, all officers' swords were sent to the armourer for sharpening. They were carried on active service in the first few months of the war but were quickly taken out of use amongst the infantry as the war became more static. CROONAERT Posted 20 December , 2003 Share Posted 20 December , 2003 What was the lowest rank of an officer entitled to have a sword in the 1914 British Infantry? Richard. All officer ranks were entitled to carry a sword, so, in answer to your question : 2nd Lieutenant. (Certain Officer cadets were also entitled before they recieved their commissions) Dave.
