This meant that your Grandfather had served one year overseas between 1915 to 1918. If he served in 1914 it would have been red. I think theres a much more in depth thread on this subject somewhere on the website.

I think Stevie B is slightly wrong regarding the significance of 1 Overseas Blue Chevron.

A soldier qualified for 1 such chevron on the day he set foot on foreign soil. Thus you grandfather could have served from 1 to 364 days overseas. If he had served 365 he would have qualified for 2 chevrons. Odd but that's how it was.

These chevrons were authorised in January 1918 by Army Order 4 and only appear on uniforms after that date.
