mmm45 Posted 21 April , 2007 Share Posted 21 April , 2007 Hi Whilst doing some family research came across the name of Wilfred Beanland on the Wilsden war memorial just outside Bradford. On checking with CWGC the only Wilfred listed was Capt Joseph Wilfred Beanland 7RWF KIA 14/8/15 aged 20 Remembered at Helles. Im just curious to see if anyone can give me more info on him to link him to Wilsden and confirm it is him listed. Thanks Ady

clive_hughes Posted 21 April , 2007 Share Posted 21 April , 2007 Hi Ady, Beanland's presence in a rural Welsh Territorial battalion isn't remarkable. The same thing happened to Lord Silsoe (then the lowly 2nd Lieutenant Malcom T. Eve) in September 1914, who had no Welsh connections whatever. He was from Bedford, a member of the Oxford University OTC, and his COs report was good enough to acquire him an immediate commission in the 6th RWF (sister battalion to Beanland's 7th). He was of similar background to Beanland, who was in Cambridge, and gaps in the Army List needed filling rapidly with young men of the "right sort". The extract from the Army List has a sort of X symbol next to his name which I assume signifies he had accepted the Overseas Service obligation (you will note that not all officers of the unit had done so). The 1/7th RWF landed at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915 so sadly he didn't last very long. You could always send for a copy of his service record from the National Archives if you wanted more background information. If you want to read Lord Silsoe's account it was published as Sixty Years A Welsh Territorial(Gomer Press, Llandysul, 1976). Best of luck, LST_164

BGS Posted 14 January , 2020 Share Posted 14 January , 2020 Hi, if you're still interested in BEANLAND, I prepared an obituary for him as part of my project to commemorate all former pupils of Bradford Grammar School named on the war memorial, available at https://www.bradfordgrammar.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/WW1-biography-Joseph-Wilfred-Beanland-14-August-15.pdf. Cheers Nick.
