Guest Pete Wood Posted 18 December , 2003 Posted 18 December , 2003 Here is the info held by the CWGC: Name: FARR, PERCIVAL WALTER KAYE Initials: P W K Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment: Inns of Court O.T.C. Age: 17 Date of Death: 19/12/1915 Service No: 7869 Additional information: Son of George Robert Kay Farr and Clara Jane Farr, of 10, Tennyson Rd., Southampton. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: 191 F. 149. Cemetery: SOUTHAMPTON OLD CEMETERY SDGW says he was born and resided in Southampton and enlisted in London, (home to the Inns Of Court OTC). Accident or illness….? Whatever happened, this young man’s life had barely begun. But he was almost certainly from a very good family, who had attended a good school. This was the usual qualifications required to get a place at the Inns of Court, Officers Training Corps. Here, at the Inns of Court , the bright, well educated lads were trained to become subalterns. Some 13,000 boys and young men were trained in this way, receiving a commission at the end of their training. This is a potted history of the true reason for the existence of the Inns Of Court: the Inns of Court is a collective name of the four legal societies in London that have the exclusive right of admission to the bar. These societies—Lincoln's Inn, Gray's Inn, the Inner Temple, and the Middle Temple date from before the 14th cent. They take their name from the buildings where originally schools of law were held, apprentice lawyers gathering to learn from masters of law, much as in guild training. Today the societies are more like clubs, although they still control admission to the bar. The Inns of Chancery were lesser societies (preparatory colleges for law), dependent on the Inns of Court; their importance declined in the 18th cent., and they disappeared in the 19th cent. There is a small museum for the Inns of Court and City Yeomanry at: Inns of Court and City Yeomanry Museum 10 Stone Buildings, Lincoln's Inn, London WC2A 3TG Tel: 020 7405 8112 Exhibition covering almost two centuries of the combined regiments' history, The Inns of Court Regiment (The Devil's Own), and the City of London Yeomanry (The Rough Riders). Find out the story behind the regiments' nicknames and see what is believed to be the only complete set of drums from the Napoleonic period.

John_Hartley Posted 18 December , 2003 Posted 18 December , 2003 Ali Just wondered, in view of your regular Census-related posts here- do you have some sort of free access or are you just paying a lot? Sorry for being nosy - it's just that I seem to eat up the £5 minimum charge without blinking and wondered if there's a dodge I've missed. John

rflory Posted 19 December , 2003 Posted 19 December , 2003 According to "The Inns of Court OTC in the Great War" Farr joined the 6th Company,Inns of Court OTC on 26 November 1915. The fact that he died 23 days later would seem to indicate that he was killed in an accident or died in some other manner while still undergoing training. Regards. Dick Flory
