Hi pals,

after my little discovery and John's comment of his Cheshire serial number, I was wondering what could be worked out from his welsh regiment service number?

it was 61755,

could you work out when he enlisted?

I have his MIC, it shows he was entitled to the VM and BWM,

He died aged 36, in 1918, I thought this would have been quite old for solider in 1918 or am i mistaken.

Hello Garron

On the age issue, the first Military Service Act (January 1916) set the age maximum at 41 for conscription and by the time of the fifth Military Service Act (April 1918) this had been increased to 55!

I have no direct knowledge of the Welsh Regiment numbering system but the 61755 looks likely to be from a block used for numbering allocations from the Infantry Reserve system on arrival in the theatre of war rather than a sequential number.

So I think it would be difficult to deduce a date of enlistment.

Regards

Mel
