Fred W Posted 15 April , 2007 Posted 15 April , 2007 Whilst the Armistace was in November 1918 the actual peace documents were not signed until 1919. Thus, what dates should be on any new memorials to the fallen of World War 1, 1914-1918, or 1914-1919? Which is correct and what are your views? Fred
Coldstreamer Posted 15 April , 2007 Posted 15 April , 2007 soldier still died years later due to effects of the war so where do you draw the line putting the last year? Personally, 1914-18 as its the classic dates.
John_Hartley Posted 15 April , 2007 Posted 15 April , 2007 Which is correct and what are your views? Fred As you'll know, the original memorials were all created by ad-hoc committes so there is variance between 14-18 and 14-19, presumably depending on how the committee felt at the time. As you're asking about new memorials, you could adopt the same attitude and say that "whatever suits". 14 - 18 would be the most readily understood and may suit the purposes well. However, if you had men killed in the later fighting in, say, Mesopotamia and Russia, then you might think 14 - 19 was a better bet. John
