MartinWills Posted 14 April , 2007 Posted 14 April , 2007 HMS Marlborough lost two men killed as a result of the torpedoeing of the vessel at Jutland - it got home safely, however. I recently acquired a picture of a Marlborough Stoker carrying the legend "Killed in Action May 31 1916". I thought this would be difficult, expecting a number of casualties, but HMS Marlborough suffered only 2 men killed at Jutland. Both were Stokers 1st Class. One was William Rustage (K/20877) who died aged 21. Parents JR & Edith Rustage of 34 Duchess Street, Lower Broughton, Salford - buried Salford (Weaste) Cemetery The other was Edgar George Monk K/4266 (age not known) buried Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery. I'd love to know which of the two is in the picture.
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 14 April , 2007 Posted 14 April , 2007 Their service registers are downloadable here or free at Kew. Name Monk, Edgar George Official Number: K4266 Place of Birth: Devonport, Devon Date of Birth: 04 August 1891 Entered the service in 1909 Catalogue reference ADM 188/875 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=1 Name Rustage, William Official Number: K20877 Place of Birth: Manchester Date of Birth: 24 August 1894 Catalogue reference ADM 188/908 Entered the service in 1913 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=1 My bet is on Monk because he looks older than 21 to me, but I didn't win at the Grand National today!
MartinWills Posted 15 April , 2007 Author Posted 15 April , 2007 Thanks for this - my leaning was towards Monk too on age grounds - must remember to look up the records when I am at Kew next. I wonder why he was buried on Tyneside given his birth at Devonport (a naval family??). Perhaps the family had moved there by 1916 or he had no family by then.
horatio2 Posted 15 April , 2007 Posted 15 April , 2007 Per A+M+T, I see you have both of these men entering in 1913 but their official numbers are 16,000+ apart, which would seem to indicate a separation of several years. I would have guessed 1910 for Monk and 1913-1914 for Rustage. Could you confirm, please, Per.
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 15 April , 2007 Posted 15 April , 2007 Horatio, Just some sloppy editing of my copy and paste! I confirm Monk is recorded in a register that was opened in 1909 and have altered my previous post to reflect that. Per Mare
Hugh Jampton Posted 23 October , 2009 Posted 23 October , 2009 My grandfather's brother William Murray on on the Marlborough when she was torpedoed. He was a Stoker !st class and was injured. He was also on HMS Triumph when it too was torpedoed earlier off Turkey. His health suffered and died in 1921 aged just 26. I have his Certificate of Service but wondered if I could see any further records of his wounds/treatment
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 23 October , 2009 Posted 23 October , 2009 Welcome to the forum Hugh Have you seen these records at the UK National Archives, Kew? ADM 1/8397/366 HMS TRIUMPH - Bombardment of Tsing Tao 12 Oct. 1914. Casualties 1914 ADM 116/1444 Loss of H.M.S. TRIUMPH - Casualties 1915 ADM 1/8489/116 HMS MARLBOROUGH in action 31 May 1916. List of casualties. [Please note: 1916 document originally erroneously catalogued as 1917 and so numbered within 1917 sequence of registered papers]
Hugh Jampton Posted 23 October , 2009 Posted 23 October , 2009 Thanks for the welcome and also for the links. I plan to be back in the Big Smoke early next year and must visit Kew for a couple of days
Clio Posted 23 October , 2009 Posted 23 October , 2009 Monk, Old Bean. His pic was published in the Newcastle illustrated Chronicle in May. You are forgetting which parts of UK did the cleaning up after Jutland.

Thanks. Where did you come across the photo originally?
Philip Wilson Posted 11 January , 2010 Posted 11 January , 2010 Martin Here is a post card image of HMS Marlborough. My great-uncle N.A.C. Hardy was a Midshipman on the Marlborough at Jutland. Philip

Tony, The card was one of a batch I bought back in 2007 all of which relate to HMS Marlborough, some 30 odd in all. There are a few other men named and quite a few who are not. It includes the football team, concert party entertainers and other oddments (groups and single men). One of the cards was sent to a Lizzie Monks & Mrs Craig living near Loughborough at Oast Leake (from Ted - presumably Edward Monks?) and another has a message to "Lizzie" from Claude. If you can let me have an email address I will dforward a high res scan of the pic - but beware posting an undisguised email address on forum as spammers will pick it up. Do you know anything more about Lizzie? Martin

Martin Thanks for reply...Struggling to send you my email address or personal message...the board says I am not allowed.added you as a friend but I cannot send you a message. No doubt Admin will sort me out. Lizzie Monks...he had a sister Gladys Elizabeth but she married at start of WW1, depends on when this card was sent...I will be chasing his siblings tomorrow so no doubt I will come across Claude et al. and if I find anything relevent will let you know. Will persevere with email as I would dearly love the hi res.
MartinWills Posted 11 January , 2010 Author Posted 11 January , 2010 Tony, I think you need either 5 or 10 posts before you can send PMs - it's one of those things that the mods have in place to prevent spammers joining up and sending messages selling viagra or software or whatever. I will see if I can get a mod to resolve the problem one way or another. Claude or Claud may be a friend, not a relative .... Pics include the 1915 ships football team, a "stokers team", a group holding a board with a welsh phrase on it (can some pal translate....) saying RHAIO BYCHGYN CYMRU Other names on some of the pics are ; H Taylor (Stoker) 1915 H Williams (Stoker) 1915 Messrs. Evans, Greaves & Murphy A J Wills (Stoker) 1915 - I would love to know more about him ..... W Hockings Leading Stoker 1915 Messrs. Charlesworth, Griffiths & White (RNR) I seem to recall they came from a postcard dealer at a fair and I remember thanking him for having kept them as a batch rather than splitting and selling each separately. The portrait of Monks is a particularly fine one and another card shows four sailors, but gives no names - one of them would appear to be Monks however. Martin
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 12 January , 2010 Posted 12 January , 2010 Messrs. Charlesworth, Griffiths & White (RNR) Microfiche copies of RNR service cards are held at the UK National Archives in BT 377/7 in service number order. You can get the service numbers from the alphabetical indexes in BT 377/1 - BT 377/6 or the medal rolls ADM 171/125 - ADM 171/129. The original records are at the Fleet Air Arm Museum.
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 12 January , 2010 Posted 12 January , 2010 A J Wills (Stoker) 1915 - I would love to know more about him ... A combination of the medal rolls and the registers of service should help you identify him and the others.
shred Posted 23 April , 2010 Posted 23 April , 2010 For anyone searching for William Rustage: Regards Garry
larney Posted 24 April , 2010 Posted 24 April , 2010 Here's my only photo of men from HMS Marlborough. The man holding the board is Carpenter Arthur Evans, of my home town of Laugharne- the photo is of Marlborough's Carpenters Crew. The rest of the men are unnamed. SteveJ
mebu Posted 24 April , 2010 Posted 24 April , 2010 For anyone interested in Marlborough, here's abit of graffiti from Richborough jail cell wall.....looks like someone affected was later a naughty boy. Regards Peter
mebu Posted 26 April , 2010 Posted 26 April , 2010 Yes it does, doesn't it. Typical of the criminal class?
Guest Ozsiris Posted 31 October , 2014 Posted 31 October , 2014 My grandfather's brother William Murray on on the Marlborough when she was torpedoed. He was a Stoker !st class and was injured. He was also on HMS Triumph when it too was torpedoed earlier off Turkey. His health suffered and died in 1921 aged just 26. I have his Certificate of Service but wondered if I could see any further records of his wounds/treatment most unhelpful My Grandfather Laurence Lonsdale was also a stoker injures in the same explosion when the torpedo hit. I have tried 20 years to find any of his records, RN are most unhelpful. He finally died 1949 from post operative causes related to his injuries an was on a disability pension . Actually i have no real evidence of his naval service other than photos at HMS Pembroke and HMS Paris. I believe he was Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve
Hugh Jampton Posted 1 December , 2014 Posted 1 December , 2014 Hello Ozsiris You can get a copy of his Service Record on-line at the National Archives, Kew.. William Murray had treatment at the Star and Garter Hospital which treated injured servicemen. I wonder if those medical records are available. I also found his last resting place in an unmarked grave in Richmond Cemetery. Not a fitting end to a stoker torpedoed twice.
