Hello Pals,

Who would like to help me ?

I am searching for any information (texts, photos or maps) which could help me at an attempt to reconstruction of the whole story of the Mine-Crater near Berry-au-Bac.

What happened ?

What is the exact location of the crater (Google Earth)?

Many thanks for any help

Hi,

I suppose you're referring to the 'Cote 108 / Mont Sapigneul' craters (there's one big one and several others). There's quite a bit info on the web available, but mainly in french. Type in google 'cote 108 mont sapigneul', one good link is this one

http://www.chtimiste.com/batailles1418/com...ryaubac1917.htm

You can easily find the site using the satellite pics on www.geoportail.fr, look for berry-au-bac, along the canal to the east, next to building along the canal, and you'll see.

The terrain is nowadays fenced in and forbidden to enter, but next to the grain silo, the fence is low, so...the craters are all still there and to the east, in the direction of the motorway, trenchsystems can be found.

Before the war, there was a quarry at point 91/Mont Sapigneul, and the germans often refer to it as the 'Steinbruch-stellung', 'Steinbruch Berry' or 'Steinbruch 91'. Photos regularly turn up on ebay; Hope this helps,

salut
