Kirkes Lamb Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 I wonder if forum members are aware of this petition? I learnt about it from the Roll of Honour web site A Petition There is a petition beign formed to request that a state funeral be held for the Unknown Warrior upon the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. To remember this anniversary in such a way would ensure it was never forgotten and would show that Her Majesty's Government is willing to pledge greater, and public support, for war veterans and war dead. In the petitions opinion, if this opportunity was not taken, an extremely important part of British modern history would fade away. petitions.pm.gov.uk/Remembrance/
truthergw Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 Hi Kirkes, there is already an extensive thread on this.
Kirkes Lamb Posted 13 April , 2007 Author Posted 13 April , 2007 Hi Kirkes, there is already an extensive thread on this. Problem with the site is knowing where to look! I guess I should have typed it in on the search! Having said that, there are not many signatures so maybe this wil act as a reminder! It cant do any harm! In the meantime to save me time, where is the thread please?
truthergw Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 Cemeteries and memorials; Michelle original poster.
barrieduncan Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...l=state+funeral Reading the thread might give some clues as to why there are so few petitions? Barrie
John_Hartley Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 In the meantime to save me time, where is the thread please? No worries. I had the time to type "petition" into the search facility. It's here John
yellow Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 If this country doesnt soon start seeing sense we wont need to give the Unknown warrior another state funeral...........we will be burying one of our own Royal Princes. So no I dont agree with two state funerals for the Unknown Warrior.......... spend the money on better patrol boats for the Royal Navy. Steve.

Kirkes Lamb Posted 13 April , 2007 Author Posted 13 April , 2007 If this country doesnt soon start seeing sense we wont need to give the Unknown warrior another state funeral...........we will be burying one of our own Royal Princes. So no I dont agree with two state funerals for the Unknown Warrior..........Blair can show his pledge to the armed forces by spending that money on better patrol boats for the Royal Navy. Steve. Each to their own opinion and al opinions respected. With regards to the patrol boats you mention- can you elaborate please? What role would they play and where? http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...l=state+funeral Reading the thread might give some clues as to why there are so few petitions? Barrie Thanks Barrie-I wil look at it now!
yellow Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 I think that the Armed Forces would view a huge state funeral costing millions as an injustice, in that the money could of been better spent on keeping our current personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan alive.........that way anymore funerals could be avoided. Steve. P.S. I think this thread belongs in the chit-chat section.

Kirkes Lamb Posted 13 April , 2007 Author Posted 13 April , 2007 Ah, now I see what you mean re patrol boats! Interesting!
truthergw Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 Since you are obviously interested, and presumably inclined to agree with the aims of the petition, perhaps you might like to explain. Why should we exhume the Unknown Warrior from his present resting place beside the greats of this country and then rebury him? Will we find him a new resting place or put him back where we got him?
MACRAE Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 Why give the unknown warrior a 2nd funeral waste of tax payers money. They would be better giving a bonus to the vetrans hospitals. It would end being a kodak opertunity for MP's and the likes then forgotten about within 24 hours . Dan

Greyhound Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 You know, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the originator of the petition had meant to say "memorial service", rather than "state funeral".
John_Hartley Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 You know, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the originator of the petition had meant to say "memorial service", rather than "state funeral". Nor me. And I assume there would be no way of amending your wording once it was posted and folk had signed up to it. Then again......
Jim Clay Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 Nor me. And I assume there would be no way of amending your wording once it was posted and folk had signed up to it. Then again...... the devious mind goes into overdrive at the thought...
John_Hartley Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 the devious mind goes into overdrive at the thought... One thinks of someone changing the burial of the "Unknown Soldier" to "Prime Minister". But isnt there a need for wooden stakes, silver bullets or somefink
Kirkes Lamb Posted 13 April , 2007 Author Posted 13 April , 2007 Since you are obviously interested, and presumably inclined to agree with the aims of the petition, perhaps you might like to explain. Why should we exhume the Unknown Warrior from his present resting place beside the greats of this country and then rebury him? Will we find him a new resting place or put him back where we got him? I saw it on the Roll of Honour webs ite today and as I hadnt seen it before and saw no obvious sign of it on this site (without searching correctly) I posted the item asking if users of the forum had seen it! I didnt say I was in favour! I opened a can of worms obviously and as a result it is however interesting to see the way some contributors responded and even twisted things! Some contributors are very kind and helpful, others are edging on being rude! Ease up and be kind to forum contributors - everyone has a right to use the forum and remember not everyone is an expert! Some people may well be put off contributing to the site if this is the way they are treated and that is not what we want! We can all learn and broaded our perspectives on many subjects by use of the site. I have no more to say on this particular subject.
truthergw Posted 13 April , 2007 Posted 13 April , 2007 Not only did you start a new thread but you resurrected a dead one and contributed to both. I think I am entitled to assume that you were interested and in favour. I asked a question that the original poster of the original thread never answered.
findabetterole Posted 14 April , 2007 Posted 14 April , 2007 As has already been mentioned.. let the Unknown Worrior lay in peace and buy the Armed Forces a decent Rifle / Individual Weapon.. or whatever they call it these days. The SA.80 has been a peace of rubbish since day one, a political farse to make 'The Last Enfield' in the UK. Why not spend that extra bit of cash and get the lads a decent weapon instead of constantly waisting cash by giving it away with the rest of the Billions each year? Sorry chums, had to get that out of my system. It's been brewing around since the SA.80 acceptance trials in '82'. Seph
John_Hartley Posted 14 April , 2007 Posted 14 April , 2007 Sorry chums, had to get that out of my system. It's been brewing around since the SA.80 acceptance trials in '82'. Phew, that's a relief. A quarter of a century of irritation solved by a posting a few lines on an internet discussion board. Would that all of life's problems were so easily solved. John (PS: Is the SA.80 a gun of some sort, then?)
