Sly Posted 12 April , 2007 Posted 12 April , 2007 Hello, here is a case found in a farm of the Somme, not really in good condition but original. There's no lid, and steel inside as an amunition box. There is a white triangle painted on each side and a blue "C 10" . Length is 76cm and width is 32cm. What is it for ? Is it a WW1 case ? thanks, Sly
GWRCo Posted 12 April , 2007 Posted 12 April , 2007 ..........looks to be a 2ndWW box. Has the metal banding for extra strength ( and to stop the box from splitting), the colour is typical british/commonwealth ww2 olive drab (could even be a 50's/60's box), the stencilling is still nice, and the rope handle doesn't look that old! Boxes like this were used for many functions - some started out in life as being instrument boxes, etc. Maybe someone knows what the markings are for? tim
Chris Henschke Posted 12 April , 2007 Posted 12 April , 2007 Is it branded or stamped on the bottom of the box? for example, C.1 Chris Henschke
Sly 1916 Posted 12 April , 2007 Posted 12 April , 2007 No, I didn't see any stamp or anything else... I 'll try to do more photos soon, thanks, Sly
Chris Henschke Posted 12 April , 2007 Posted 12 April , 2007 Various symbols and colours were used to denote different natures of cartridge packages (circles, diamonds, half-moons, etc). For example, red for howitzer cartridges, light blue for gun cartridges. In 1918 a four inch white triangle denoted cartridges for 8-inch High Velocity Howitzers. Letters denoting the nature of the propellant were also stencilled on all four sides. If it was a “grouped” propellant the letters were replaced by a group letter and number, enclosed in a hollow rectangle (Blue for cordite), as this box appears to have. Plenty of ammunition packaging boxes were painted green during the Great War (or red, or grey, or stained light brown). Chris Henschke
