Nearly all the men in the family are serving and some have been invalided. He has over 20 cousins with the colours"

Sjt. Humphrey's was awarded the DCM with the following citation: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Althought gassed, he refused to leave his gun, and by his exemplary conduct and his coolness kept it in action despite heavy shell and machine gun fire. Later, he got his gun away from a most difficult position, returning immediately and directing the withdrawal of the second gun of his section under intensely difficult circumstances."
