chris basey Posted 16 December , 2003 Posted 16 December , 2003 Daily Sketch Saturday 6th July 1918 (King George V Silver Wedding Day): news item and photo "Sgt G.W.Humphreys RGA of Romford has been awarded the DCM for preventing guns falling into the hands of the Germans, He was previously promoted of the field for bravery. Nearly all the men in the family are serving and some have been invalided. He has over 20 cousins with the colours"

rflory Posted 17 December , 2003 Posted 17 December , 2003 Sjt. Humphrey's was awarded the DCM with the following citation: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Althought gassed, he refused to leave his gun, and by his exemplary conduct and his coolness kept it in action despite heavy shell and machine gun fire. Later, he got his gun away from a most difficult position, returning immediately and directing the withdrawal of the second gun of his section under intensely difficult circumstances." Regards.
