love4history Posted 10 April , 2007 Posted 10 April , 2007 Goodafternoon gentlemen, Currently I'm doing some research on a member of the CEF that was MIA at first but apparently was found afterwards cause he rests in a known grave. Could anyone interpret the following pics of his service record and see if there's any indication when exactly his body would have been found? Thanks for all help! cheers from Flanders
the gunners dream Posted 10 April , 2007 Posted 10 April , 2007 Looking at what you've got it seems this was reviewed on the 12th June 1917 and changed from 'Missing Believed Killed to 'Died on or since 2nd October 1916' It was then reviewed again on the 8th and the 11th February 1918 and on those dates it was noted he was KIA on the 2nd October 1916, but this was not confirmed until the 26th March 1918. My thoughts on this was that he was killed and his body was not found until later, e.g. when the front moved and his body could be recovered. I can't see any indication as to when that was though. Steve
John_Hartley Posted 10 April , 2007 Posted 10 April , 2007 Doesnt it seem likely that if a body was found, then it was around the February 1918 dates? I think the June 1917 entry is the official "presumption of death" - a suitable period of time passing with nothing being heard of him. John
cmf Posted 10 April , 2007 Posted 10 April , 2007 My great great grandfather was killed while serving with the PPCLI in 1915. He was buried at Vormezeele, indeed his records indicate the plot, but no remains or grave were found after the war, so he is commemorated on the Menin Gate. Given that, depending on the exact details of his death, there may not have been much to initially bury, how thorough would have the search been of an extant grave site after the war? Is it possible he does rest with his comrades, but unmarked? Chris
