lionboxer Posted 15 December , 2003 Posted 15 December , 2003 Can anyone tell me what information is contained in the War Badge records? I have the badge number or certificate number, not sure which, of two men :- B111976 for 15251 Cpl.Lutkin, R.Sussex and B295272 for 75924 Pte. Rowe, Londons. Lionboxer
hmsk212 Posted 15 December , 2003 Posted 15 December , 2003 Hi Lionboxer, Welcome to the forum, the details you can get from a Silver War Badge Roll are as follows :- Regimental Number Rank Name (In Full) Unit Discharged From No of Badge & Certificate Date of Enlistment Date of Discharge Cause of Discharge (wounds or sickness & para of Kings Regulations) Whether served overseas (Yes or No) Quite often you will also get the recipients age at date of discharge. Cheers Steve
lionboxer Posted 15 December , 2003 Author Posted 15 December , 2003 Thanks Steve. I was hoping a date would be given when they were wounded and possibly the location. Lionboxer
Nick Saunders Posted 29 December , 2003 Posted 29 December , 2003 Where can you access the war badge records? Is it too much to hope that they are available on line? Nick
hmsk212 Posted 29 December , 2003 Posted 29 December , 2003 Hi Nick Sorry but they are not available on-line you have to go the Kew to get them. They are to be found under WO 329. Sadly, unless you know the recipient of the badge they are almost impossible to trace. If you only have the badge number available then there are a handful of people that will research them for a fee but I do not have contact details for them. Perhaps some of the Pals can give you their details. I have managed to get all of the Other Ranks badge numbers for the Machine Gun Corps, Guards Machine Gun Regiment, Machine Gun Guards & Tanks Corps so I could at least let you know if any of your badges appear on those lists. Steve
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 29 December , 2003 Posted 29 December , 2003 Without wishing to advertise any professional researcher at the risk of insulting others, you may wish to contact Jonathan Collins who operates the service Steve describes above. Whenever I have a badge without provenance I use his service, although Steve has helped me with an MGC badge in the past Ian PS I have no link to Mr Collins
Nick Saunders Posted 29 December , 2003 Posted 29 December , 2003 Steve and Ian Many thanks for your information. Can I just confirm that the badges we are talking about are the one with 'For King and Empire - Services rendered' If so I have two of those one has B339217 on the back and the other 258128. Both of these I bought recently in junk shop for £4.00 each. Best wishes Nick
hmsk212 Posted 29 December , 2003 Posted 29 December , 2003 Nick Yes, they are indeed Silver War Badges and I can confirm that neither of the badges appear amongst my rolls for MGC, GMGR, MGG or Tank Corps. But I can say that you have got yourself a bargain at only £4 each. Add on the cost of £3 for the swb roll research and you've got yourself a starting point for good research of your own. Your next step would be Medal Index Card, Soldiers Records and possibly Regimental War Diary should the badges be for wounds as opposed to sickness. That said, I do have a badge for sickness and the recipient turned out to have been wounded by a grenade, captured by the Germans and later repatriated due to his injuries. Happy hunting. Steve
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 29 December , 2003 Posted 29 December , 2003 Hi Nick, Yes - silver war badges. Book value is £10-20 so £4 is a very good deal. Cheers - Ian
Chris_Baker Posted 29 December , 2003 Posted 29 December , 2003 Just in case members don't know what this looks like:
