There were a few types of German WW1 MG ammo boxes produced that had a 500 round capacity but the most common box is the Patronenkaste 15 with a 250 round capacity. They are easily identified as the handle is offset to one side making it easier carrying 2 together in one hand. Here is a photo of one Patronenkaste 15 from my MG08 display.
