I have my great grandad's war records and know that he was in the 1st battalion if the east surrey regiment in 1905.(16 years in army)enlisted in late 1902 .His service number was 7632 . on his records it says he was in south africa in 1902 but this was crossed out and underneath it says european campaign 1915.

on his history sheet it says

france 29.12.02 - 12.8.1914 total 11 yrs 229 days

illegible 13.8.1914 - 17.12.1914 178 days

home 18.12.1914 - 26.4.1915 129 days

? france 27.4.1915 - 26.12.1915 244 days

home 27/12/1915 - 22.1..1916 28 days.

he was given 3 medals star british war medal victory is there a website i can visit that i might be able to understand as i have googled east surrey regiment ,and it goes on about regiments and battalions going into each other which is just sending me mad. i would like to find out where he was in france and other front line information. any help gratefully recieved.

.i can't match the badge on his cap to the 1's of the east surrey regiment any idea's.Looks like a horse with a flag flying behind it.

What a lot of questions! The badge is the easiest to answer straight away - it is the Queen's West Surrey Regiment. (A lamb not a horse!).

Pte Walter E. Cox (L/7632 incomplete) does have a Medal Index Card which can be downloaded for £3.50 and it does say EAST Surrey Regiment.

Incidentally, do look at the 'Long Long Trail' link at the top of the page. It is designed to be user-friendly and may clear a few things up for you. The MIC should let you know which battalion of the East Surreys he was in and that could then allow experts on the forum to say where he could have fought. Do ask questions! Friendly folks here!!

He was in South Africa at some point. The ribbons in the photo clearly shows the Queens South Africa medal (QSA), the 14 Star (with rosette) and the British War Medal & Victory Medal.

Thank you for answering my question.I didn't see any transfer details on any of his army records, from east surrey to west surrey.

One officers name that signed his statement of service was a H Ringwood commander of ist battalion.

certainly a new mystery.

though grandad did tell his daughter that he was in Russia for 6 years but i haven't found any evidence of this.

Thank you for your help.

Both the fact that he is wearing all his WW1 medal ribbons and the fact that he has collar badges on dates the photo as post-WW1.

I thought he was abit old for WW1 in the photo as he was born 1883 and he would have only been 33 by time of discharge.

His proceedings on discharge give corps as East Surrey Regiment ,Battalion, battery or company as DEPOT.

on the 29/01/1916 at Kingston on Thames.

he was in south africa from 22.2.1902 until 20.8.1902.

One thing which strikes me as very odd is his apparently being posted to France for 11 years prior to the war. It might be useful to scan the image of your document and the MIC if you download it.
